Thank you so much for that info. Did not know he was in the volunteer bridge. I new he did volunteer, and did not wait to be called up. Does that mean he died in UK? I understood he was shot down. Maybe I can find out more about it with his service number
Where did you find the info?

GG thanks . Maybe he was wounded and came back to Uk. Will have to see if I can find more about the regiment If he died abroad , would they have issued a DC from Lamberth? I think not, so maybe he was based in UK. The family evacuated to Dorset (Sturminster Newton), me included! lily was pregnant, at the time. My mother , me my Aunt and cousin same age as me and Aunt lily .My grandfather drove us there from London and we lived in a rented cottage . I went back once some years ago, but the cottage was no longer there ! Sadly only me left now.

Getting the death certificate may give you the answer.

You could also try here to get a copy of his Service records

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/overview

Cost £30 and take a while to arrive I understand.

safc
1939 register, should show she was living with her parents at that address. It was a large victorian terrace house 4 floors, and Lily had the top floor. should have been George and Alice Martin, and possibly 2 sons and maybe 1 daughter /husband and granddaughter? They lived in the rest of the house. I guess it showed as two households though. Also i guess William was already in the RAF then.
probably flats now and worth a fortune being in london.
What date was the 1939 reg taken? It throws up interesting hints, for me, as i was around then!!

Pickles Thanks again, very interesting re Granma. As they did own some chalets (Well wooden huts really) outside Whitstable Don;t understand why Doris was put as Johns , as she did not marry until 1943, also if Louisa was there, then daughter Beryl b1937 would also have been there. Maybe some-one has changed Doris name?

As Doris is still alive, I am going to send that piece of info to Australia for her family to see
You are all so helpful . Maybe I should rejoin FMP, to get the 1939 info.
i have photos of me and my parents taken about that time , being pushed along a seafront, so maybe we could have been there as well (at another address)
HOW fascinating this turning out
Thanks P

prickly, Yes i guess you are right. Sadly Beryl died last October. .

Brought back memories of going back to The chalets in Seasalter, after the ww2, and having to move shingle to get in them, and there was still some beach barricades up, but once removed, we where able to collect plenty of cockles and winkles, Oh carefree happy childhood days!! That is the place where beryl and I had our first "Crush" on a boy called Micheal!! we where about nine years old!!
