Baptism John Vaughan about 1770 in Somerset

Have been hunting for this for over 10 years.
I have his death certificate April 1856, aged 86 in Bath, Somerset
On Ancestry I have found a John Ven, baptised 1771 in Cheddar (about 25 miles from Bath)
If parents gave name as VAUGHAN, could vicar have heard VEN? As a lot of people were illiterate back then, no point asking how it is spelt.
Only conjecture on my part, or wishful thinking.

Any thoughts please
