Wouldn't rule Sarah Selina out completely either, a bit on the young side, but these things happened...

Joseph and Ann had another son Francis Joseph born 1842. For some reason he lived with Joseph's brother Moses Rennolds Evans but still a big gap between Francis and William.Francis emigrated to NZ in 1872

I thought maybe he might be Ann's son.Louisa was married before William was born. Elizabeth Ann was Louisa's daughter. Mary Maria was another possibility as his mother.Ann Evans was with daughter Louisa in 1871 and William and Elizabeth were married in 1875. Would the family have sanctioned an incestuous marriage??

At least one more child for Joseph and Ann....

HI, I've just added the birth of Joseph and Ann's son Frederick in 1839, both baptism and GRO, mother's maiden name given for him as Sprod, so I think William is illegitimate.

ArgyllGran Report 4 Mar 2017 16:35

As Ann's name was Sprod, the 1847 birth with no mms must be William's birth, so probably mother unmarried.

Also, there's a eight-year gap between Frederick's birth and William's, so unless Joseph and Ann had lost some children between those two, or had William as an belated afterthought, it looks as if he is the daughter's child.

Joseph and Ann seem to have had their other children baptised at St Mary Redcliffe, but no baptism there for William c1848.

Children baptised St Mary Redcliffe, parents named as Joseph and Ann Evans:

Ann 4th June 1826
Louisa 2nd March 1828
Mary Maria 25th Dec 1831
Sarah Selina 19th May 1833
Harriet 25th June 1837
Julia 25th June 1837
Frederick 25th Aug 1839

EDIT: Maiden name given for Frederick's birth:

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
EVANS, FREDERICK SPROD Order
GRO Reference: 1839 S Quarter in BEDMINSTER Volume 11 Page 61

I suspect you are right, and William is Joseph and Ann's grandchild.

Joseph married Ann Sprod in Bristol 17 Nov 1923.

Thanks for that. The census is definitely him and it does say he is the son of Joseph and Ann. I think that the GRO record with no MMN is him. The problem is that he later married Elizabeth Ann Lodge who if he was Joseph and Ann's son was his niece.I was hoping to find a baptism which might show she was his cousin.

Currently not finding the baptism.

The GRO gives no MMN for the first birth, of plain William Evans (might give substance to hin being the child of an unmarried mother?) . Oram for mother of William Henry Evans:

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
EVANS, WILLIAM - Order
GRO Reference: 1847 D Quarter in BEDMINSTER Volume 11 Page 54

EVANS, WILLIAM HENRY ORAM
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in BEDMINSTER Volume 11 Page 59

Hi,

Would someone who has access to Bedminster/Bristol baptismal records, kindly look for a baptism for William 1847/48. I am trying to establish whether he was the legitimate son of Joseph and Ann Evans or the illeglitimate son of their daughter Ann.Thanks.
