Some advice please. I am trying to trace what ever info I can re a child born but who did not survive. This is as shown on the 1911 census. William Davison born c.1881, died c.1953. Married Edith Cotter in1906, born c.1880. They had two surviving children, William born c.1907 and Ernest born c.1909 plus one other child who did not survive, but it does nor state if it was male/female or age at death. I have tried searching various sites for births and also for deaths, but there are far too many possibilities to just order up certificates. So, can anyone offer any advice as to how I could possibly reduce the number of possibilities in order to purchase certificates?
Many thanks

Good evening,

If the child was still born, the registration will be on a closed register (this prevents fraud etc)

You will sadly not be able to get the certificate for that child unless you have the full details of the birth location and exact date of birth.

Trial and error is possibly the only way, The 1911 census is also bad timing for BMD registration including mother maiden name, as this also started in 1911.

You can search for births pre 1911 with mother's maiden name here:

As you say there are too many possibilities. Do you know the names of William and Edith's parents and siblings? Quite often couples named their children after their own parents or brothers and sisters so that could narrow it down a bit.

Well done AustinQ - I always forget the GRO search. I was busy typing whilst you posted and I forgot to refresh the page before posting.
