I suspect Eliza is still living in 1861- and that probably the reason why Thomas didn't marry Emma Stickland (as he was still legally married).

It's also possible that Eliza is living with another man in 1861 using his surname too. I think it will be difficult to trace her- if her marriage broke down, she could have assumed any surname.

Have you traced her siblings to see if she's living with them?

I see in 1861 Thomas is down as unmarried and has a son the following year. He is with Emma in 1871

There is certainly a connection between the Thomas we are following and the one above - It must be the same one Austin as I too have been looking for a marriage to Stickland but couldn't find one............

The reason I was looking was that on the 1851 census with Thomas and his parents is a William Toler aged 3.

He is with sister Fanny (now using the name Fowler!) and her married sister Elizabeth on 1861.

His mmn shows Stickland and his middle name is also Jacon !!!

I did notice how the names changed ........... I went poking aorund to see if I could find out why Samuel was sometimes one and then the other. The thught was that might help to find him ........... but I couldn't.

I won't have any time until the weekend, but have you tried looking in the 1851 for a child by forename, with parents' forenames, date and county of birth only??
