This is the family, Yes Enoch lived in Lascar Lane Sheffield. Herbert being a nephew but Florence and Ethel daughters of Enoch always referred to him as being their brother, infact their cousin. So it wasn't Herbert who went into a home, proof of it above in post. Ethel's daughter said her mother told her he was in a home.. Joseph Hodges eldest brother of Enoch was father of Herbert. He also had a Florence and Ethel as daughters. Enoch also had daughters Florence and Ethel which causes some confusion. More confusion was that Enoch Hodges also listed as Hodgett, on his first marriage,to Alice Burns, daug Florence also listed at birth as Hodgett and her marriage certificate was stated both Hodgett and Hodges, but her younger sister was Ethel Hodges. Thank you it has certainly cleared up that mystery for me. Perhaps it was the stepson of Enoch Hodges who was in a mental home, just don't know. |

The Herbert Hodges in the 1939 register that was posted by Choccy gives his birth as 12th May 1901 which would be right for the birth in the June qtr. of 1901 in Auckland. |

Herbert's birth - his birth certificate would give DOB which would help to track him on the 1939 register if still alive - |

If you buy the death certificate it should tell you where he died. |

Looking at the deaths, I feel rather confused because since posting I found that Herbert Hodges was born in 1901 in Aukland Durham, his mother dying 10 days after his birth, His mother was Fawsett. He was the son of Grandads brother. In 1911 I found him living with my Grandparents in Castleford, states he was a nephew age 9. my mother being 6 months old, she had a sister born 1913 and their mother Alice Hodges died in 1915 so Grandad moved to Sheffield and believe Herbert went with them. Always remember Mum saying she visited Herbert who lived in a home, my Aunt confirmed that she also visited him. Seeing the death in 1956 District Don Valley, Sheffield has the river Don going through it. but growing up I never remember my Mum visiting Herbert or going to his funeral, her and her sister always referred to him as being a brother. The Don death in 1955 seems the one but can't believe my Mum didn't know of it, I would have been 15 at the time. Must now see if there are any homes in the Don Valley to find if there are any records for him. Must admit I didn't work out the age of the Herbert Hodges 1944 death in Manchester. |

Please can someone look on the 1939 registers for a Herbert Hodges who I believe could have been in a mental home in Manchester. He was born 1901 and I found one died in 1944 Manchester. I was always given to understand he was my mothers brother, only to find him being her cousin.. Any information would be grateful |
