Does anyone have a direct connection to the Latham family my grandfather was John Latham born approx 1893 in Bolton Lands he died in 1951 in Hackney London, his father being the above. I am trying to get hold of a photo of him if possible, any other photos of this family would also be welcome.

Try looking in members trees which is under the search heading above the boards

Put in the names in to see if anyone has them in their tree ,you can then try and make contact by clicking on the find out more box and sending a message

:-)

and the other thing to do Anne, is to put your father and his father in your own tree at this site.

That way anyone else searching will find you. -- Ah, oops, I see you do have John 1893 for example.

Be sure to always keep a current email address in your account here, so it's best to use a free online account like Gmail that is permanent. Even if you don't pay for a subscription, you can reply to messages you receive.

You can also look for your family's birth, marriage, death records at Freebmd

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

and attach a 'postem' saying you would like to contact family members, and put your email address there (another reason to use an anonymous permanent online account).

That will solve the 'approx' in your dates, too, as you will find the exact years in the index.

and this is the other useful index

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

which will now tell you mother's surnames for births

this is probably your John?

By the way, I tend to want to say 'good luck with that' when people post about looking for family photos.

The thing is, what you really need to do is look for family members (which means look for them, not just post and hope they find you :-) )
-- and it can actually happen.

I finally put the work into tracking down a first cousin of my father whom we knew of (a fairly well-known pianist, born in the 1940s) but had never had any contact with, him having emigrated to the US and then Australia, and my father's father having had no contact with his family after marrying. I just wanted to say hello and let him know of my family history research.

I reached him through the university in Australia he had retired from. He had never heard of my father, or my grandfather - his father's eldest sibling.

But he had a fabulous family portrait of my great-grandparents and 5 of their 7 children in front of their house, and had it scanned and sent to me. He didn't know who any of the people in the picture were, but I was able to name them all for him and date the photo ... because neither my grandfather nor his father was in it.

The picture was taken in the late summer of 1907: just after my dad's father joined the military, at age 15, having lied about his age, and just before the cousin's father was born, as my great-grandmother's figure showed. :-)

So comb through the family tree and try to locate descendants. Given the number of kids in 1911

James Latham 43
Ellen Latham 39
Mary Ellen Latham 19
John Ladham 18
James Garrett Ladham 16
Catherine Ladham 14
Louisa Ladham 11
Sarah Ladham 9
Agnes Ladham 7
George Ladham 4
Fredrick Ladham 2
William Ladham 11/12
Thomas Ladham 11/12
-- plus a family tree shows Winifred 1913

there should be quite a few of them!

The surname spelling was corrected at Ancestry to Latham by a user there in 2014. She was on the site today, so you would be able to contact her through there. There are also 5 family trees there with James and Ellen and their children. If you don't have a subscription, a free 14-day trial would give you time to contact them all (send them your email address).

Also, leave notes in records at Ancestry. Add Ellen's birth surname to her census records, for instance. Include your email address there so you can be contacted in future by any family member who searches there.

Goodness' you have been so helpful, thanks again, Anne

Also to Shirley , yes your search is the same family but the previous generation, Garrett Latham 1839 - 1884 & his wife Catherine McMahon 1839 - 1919. Thanks to your help too.
