Member Since: November 2004 Posts: 9 Send Message	Can anyone help please? Looking for Stephen Henry Power born in Poole 1870/1. I can find him on the 1901 census but then on the 1891 there is only an entry for Stephen Powers. Can this be a misprint or is it the wrong one? Can the surnames be transcripted differently due to old fashioned writing?

Member Since: July 2005 Posts: 10,619 Send Message	You have to be aware of dialects, hearing, spelling, writing, mis-transcribing - to name a few things when trying to find entries on census, bmd information etc. Ages are often out too - 1891 census, someone says they are 30 years old. 1891 - 30 =1861. However, as census was taken March/April usually, there are 9 months of 1860, that would leave the person being 30 in 1891 when it was taken. Then there's also the "little white lie" and the genuine don't quite know due to illiteracy etc. Always best to put +/- 2 years at least when looking for dates and ticking name variants when inputting names. (Also pays to think outside the box too) I like to think - ish - is a good word when dealing with genealogy.
