I have 3 sisters that were born in Letterkenny Ireland. Sometime between 1918-1922 they moved to the glasgow area. I have found there deaths but can't find any marriages apart from one of them that got married at the age of 63 which was Margaret. There was Margaret McGeehan born 08/03/1889 and she married a James Donaghey 1952 and she died 1957 in Auchterader Scotland, she was down as McDermid at one point and used the name Cunningham another time (not sure if she married any of them or not). Then there was Bridget born 20/12/1890 and she died a Smith in 1977 in the Glasgow area. Then there was Sarah Jane and she went by the name Jeannie and she died a Maginn, she was born in 06/01/1894 and died in 1984 in the Glasgow area. Their parents were called Charles McGeehan and Sarah McKinley. I'm hoping someone out there can find what i'm looking for as i have tried and tried but can't seem to find them to have got married unless they didn't and just took on their partners names :-S

They may have married in Ireland.

Irish records are rather patchy. I've never found my late mother-in-law's birth in 1921.

There certainly isn't any record of them marrying in Scotland, at least as far as I can see.

Or you may be right, and they didn't actually marry their partners.

EDIT:

Or perhaps they married other people first, and then later married Messrs Smith and Maginn.
There are numerous marriages in Scotland of women named Sarah or Bridget McGeehan (or variant spelling), although none to a Smith or a Maginn.

What are the first names of these two gentlemen?

Thanks. I think my mother in law said James for jeannie but she can't remember the smith one.

The parents marriage is on irishgenealogy.ie

Married 3 Mar 1886 at the RC Chapel Newtoncunningham, Manorcunningham
I have copied the image....

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/51604135

The births of the children are found on the same site.
All born at: Ballylevin, Manorcunningham, Letterkenny

Margaret: 8 Mar 1889
Bridget: 20 Dec 1890
William 12 Jun 1892
Sarah 6 Jan 1894
Charles 11 Dec 1896

EDIT:
Looks like son, Charles McGeeghan married Mary McMenamin at Manorcunningham on 20 Nov 1925

When their father died in 1919, it was daughter Jeanie McGeehan who signed the death cert. ( assuming this was Sarah. She was 25yrs and unmarried at 1919)

1911 census:
The ages of Sarah and her brother Charles have been transposed
Sarah would be 17yrs and Charles was 14yrs but are entered the other way round?

Scotlands People
The only name on the 1952 marriage index for Margaret is McGeehan
and only 2 names on her 1957 death index are McGeehan and Donaghey.
Where did you find the other names that you mention?

2 names on Bridget's 1977 death in Old Kilpatrick are Smith & McGeehan

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 31 May 2017 15:31

Jeannie's death is registered with both forenames - Jeannie and Sarah.

MAGINN
SARAH
90
1984
611/ 218
Glasgow, Martha St

MAGINN
JEANNIE
90
1984
611/ 218
Glasgow, Martha St

The death certs for Jeannie and Bridget would tell you their husbands'/ partners' full names. That "might" help, though I've tried all sorts of variations on SP to no avail.

Thankyou. Yes that's the next stage I'm going to do and get the death certs. I spent a bit to much lately on all of this so I'm going to do it next month. The other names Mcdermid and Cunningham came from social services. Margarets daughter had the name Mcdermid and it says her father was William but on her birth details he was not down and her daughter Martha was a Mcgeehan when born. When Martha got married in 1941 it had her mum down as Margaret Mcdermid nee Cunningham. Also when Martha had her 1st Child in 1930 she put him up for foster care and she was down as Cunningham and it had her mum down with the same name. 2 years later she had another son and was now Mcdermid. I can understand her taking her dad's name on Mcdermid but not the Cunningham unless maybe the father of her 1st child was a Cunningham but we will never know. Maybe she lied

I did wonder if the Cunningham name was made up- the family were from Manorcunningham- so maybe a reference to that?

Debbie,
Where was Margaret's daughter Martha at 1911?

The 1911 Irish census was taken on 2 Apr 1911 where 21 yr old Margaret appears with her parents and siblings.
Margaret gave birth to her daughter in Jan of that year.

Where was 3month old Martha at 1911?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 31 May 2017 16:15

There is a Jeanie Maginn living in Langlands Road, Glasgow with Richard Maginn on the electoral register 1937 onwards

Not sure what year Richard disappears but in 1953 Jeanie/ Jean/ Jane is listed with a Letitia Maginn.

oooh brilliant everyone thankyou. Yes Austin i did wonder that too about the Cunningham name. I just find it odd why though. Oh i seen a birth with a Letitia and did wonder. I will ask my mother in law if she remembers that name as i haven't heard it mentioned but it might ring a bell. Glasgow Lass, i don't know where Martha was in 1911 maybe they forgot to mention her, bit of a mystery. Thanks for all the info everyone :-D

Hang on....

I've just looked back at the other thread posted by Austin and now see that the McGeehan family were entered onto the 1901 census as CONOGHAN

I've no idea why but, it does sound very like : Cunningham

Look again at the witnesses on the 1886 marriage that I posted.
The witness is Mary Conoghan.

Also look at the 1901 census info under form B!.
The owner/Landlord was Thomas McKinlay

How weird, what is going on with this family

♥♥♥Debbie♥♥♥

♥♥♥Debbie♥♥♥ Report 31 May 2017 18:01

Just wondering Austin if the name change had anything to do with what you posted on the other thread, probably not but maybe he was in a bit of trouble....maybe he couldn't pay the £1 and did a runner
Father, Charles was involved in a work dispute in 1895- he was absent without cause or leave and was ordered to pay £1 in damages to his employer. Charles abode is given as Ballylevin.

Son, Charles was born December 1896 at Ballylevin- so I assume the family would still be in the area 1901.

where did you find this Austin

Richard Maginn married Mary Jane Devlin in 1928. Their daughter Letitia was born in 1930 and died in 2015. Mary Jane Maginn nee Devlin died in 1971 aged 68 years. So looks like either Richard and Mary Jane divorced or Jeanie just adopted Richards surname.

Looks like Richard died in 1945 aged 68 years.

♥♥♥Debbie♥♥♥ Report 31 May 2017 21:02

I was told Jeannie was with a James and had a son called James and this was before 1970s as she moved to england in 1973 but then again she has been wrong about a lot of things

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 31 May 2017 21:16

Well if she had a son with someone called James it is more likely to have been before she was with Richard as she would have been 51 when Richard died. Unless the Jeanie with Richard is not your Sarah Jane but Richard's wife Mary Jane........

all a big mystery this family but getting little bits that are adding up, thanks

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 1 Jun 2017 06:38

Now RG has posted that marriage I'm thinking the Jeanie with Richard is likely his wife and not our Jean. I'll look into it later- I'm already running late!

I think I found a newspaper report re Charles involved in the work dispute in 1895- I don't have time to find it now, but will look later.

However, I believe the family were known as Conaghan before this- there is an article in Derry Journal - Wednesday 08 January 1879 where a Charles Mgeehan, alias Conaghan is a witness in a case where Alexander Mgeehan was charged with stabbing Thomas Lowrey.

Sorry so rushed- I'll be back shortly.
