Anything's possible, Benjamin!
IF Mr Bateman existed, and IF Mary Ann was actually widowed by 1901, he doesn't seem to have died in the Pontypridd area.
If in Hanham, there's this possibility:
Deaths Sep 1899 (>99%) Bateman Frank 48 Keynsham 5c 379
However, even if he did exist, she doesn't appear to have married him.

-Addition to the above -
As of last week, I am now in possession of the probate mentioned above, which includes a transcription of the Will itself.
No mention at all is made of Mary Ann - what would otherwise, presumably, have been her deceased husband's share of any residue of the estate went instead to her eldest daughter, Alice Thorne, whose husband, Frederick, was one of the Trustees.
Still no clues on the mysterious Mr Bateman. What muddies the waters somewhat is the fact that Mary Ann's father's mother was born with the surname Bateman. Is it possible that she merely adopted a surname that was already in the family?

Thanks again, everyone.
I already had all the census stuff posted above, so there was no need to have posted it. My post was an attempt to find the mysterious Mr. Bateman, rather than anything about Mary Ann herself.
Chris - I have the marriage certificate for Rosina Hawkins and George White, dated 26/12/1906 and no, Mary Ann does not sign it as a witness - the witnesses are Lily Price and Frederick Thorne, the second one being the bride's brother-in-law. As it happens, the 1911 census is, so far, the most recent thing I have for them, though she IS mentioned [as "Mrs White, Treorky"] in the newspaper obit you provided a link to.

Thyanks for all the feedback, guys.
The census in Welsh Newton posted by alviegal is definitely a red herring; as far as we know, Mary Ann was in the Rhondda until at least 1896, including on that census (as previously stated).
The earliest record we have of her being anywhere other than the Rhondda as an adult is the 1901 census, as identified above. This is followed by a 1902 military record for her youngest son, Isaac (see 1891 census for Ystrad Rhondda shown above), who lists her as his next-of-kin, at the same address in Hanham as the 1901 census shown above.
So, we're still no closer to identiying the mysterious Mr. Bateman......

IF she was married to Mr Bateman -
The only Batemans who died in Pontypridd district between 1891 and 1901 were children.
In Keynsham district, the only possibles are: Samuel Joseph, aged 26 in 1891, George, aged 38 in 1894, William, aged 36 in 1894, another George, aged 67 in 1894, Frank, aged 48 in 1899
But no, there is no record of a likely marriage. It looks as if they weren't married, but she was using his name.
