Could be the the OP is referring to the 'long s' often seen in older records.

Its also worth pointing out that in an age when the majority couldn't read or write, there often wasn't a 'correct' way to spell names. It was up to the person writing the record.I have numerous examples with my own surname, modern is Crews, but seen Creus, Crues, Creyws, Croose and several others

Its also worth mentioning that we might assume the capital S is an f

eg Bafs instead of Bass & Mafson instead of Masson

I see a lot of spelling mistakes on censes and marriage certs:- Remember that the scribes put a capital S small s when righting names. ( BaSs, MaSson ) ect.
