I have been asked to find details of the war record and the ship that my friend's two uncles served on alongside a friend during WW2. All we have are their names...William Roost born 1925, Frederick Roost and James McCulloch who used to visit with the brothers when they were all on leave.
Advice where to look and if this will be available now?

Military records post 1920, which would include WW2, will still be with the MOD.

Depending on how long ago they died, your friend can apply to have copies of her uncles sent to her at a cost of £30 each. If William or Frederick had children, there is less on an issue if they apply. The records will only be sent at no charge if the service man or his widow can sign the forms. You'd need to obtain a copy of James McCulloch's DC before applying for his & may end up with a redacted version.

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:

They may take several months to arrive.

Click on this link and have a read of JoyLouise's post 9 Oct 2016. Its relevant as she is commenting on the search for her relatives Naval Records

"After I had already spoken to a gentleman who informed me that their records did not show all of the information regarding a sailor's service as that was handed to the departing sailor, I was told that it may not be worthwhile paying £30 for information they held that would, in all likelihood, reveal nothing much at all."

She goes on to say that the application forms do need to be accompanied by a copy of the sailors DC

Thankyou both for your response. Just found out that the men were stokers on The Duke of York warship so making a little bit of headway.

You say William Roost born 1925

Is this not William and brother Frederick's birth registrations.......

Births Jun 1924 (>99%)
Roost William C Lewis Bristol 6a 151

Births Sep 1922 (>99%)
Roost Frederick J Lewis Bristol 6a 145

If the above birth registration for your friends Frederick is correct.....
