Chrissie2394 Report 5 Jul 2017 22:39

I am trying to identify the parent s of John Dakin who gave his place of birth as Mickleover Derbyshire in the census records apart from one in which it says Langley.

A tree on Ancestry gives names a Joseph and Ann as his parents but it doesn't say where this info has come from.

I have been advised by someone that there is a baptism for a John Dakin on 19th July 1812 at Mickleover, parents Thomas and Charlotte but how can I prove who John's parents were. I've read about the naming patterns hoping that may help but it hasn't. The sons I've found for him and his wife Elizabeth were names, James,Herbert, John, Thomas and Elijah.

This is the family in 1841

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Mickleover, Burton upon Trent, Derbyshire, England

John Dakin Male 28 1813 Derbyshire, England
Elizabeth Dakin Female 29 1812
John Dakin Male 1 1840 Derbyshire, England
Herbert Dakin Male 3 1838 Derbyshire, England
James Dakin Male 5 1836 Derbyshire, England

Eliza Dakin Female 7 1834 Derbyshire, England

I so hope someone can help.

Thank you MargaretM that is the correct one, I have the death certificate.

Thank you for the info Chris Ho. I wasn't awarecof the Derbyshire Advertiser or Mercury entries although I do have Elizabeth death certificatr.

Derek was able to confirm that Thomas was the son of John and Elizabeth but nothing on Johns parents.

Wow you have been busy, thank you.

Dea, yes they are the correct details.

Chris Ho, I had seen the original baptism record for Elizabeth but not for Sarah. When viewing the original, I couldn't make out if the second name was Peat or Peal. I haven't added Hannah Potts as mum as there was a John Potts who married Hannah Percival in Jan 1811 and wondered if they were the parents and for some reason Johns name wasn't added to the record. With you adding Sarah Potts baptism record, and it stating base born, would you say both girls were illegitimate? This is another of my brick walls. A Hannah Potts married at Breedon on the Hill in 1824, I wonder if it was the same Hannah.

I will have to visit All Saints Mickleover to see if there's a grave stone with other family members listed.

That baptism looks very promising.

Mary, I understand that many years ago families did live very close to each other so that does look promising. I think what's making me unsure is with the exception of John and Elizabeths son Thomas, there doesn't appear to be any other 'family names,

Thank you all so much for your help. I have a genuine reason to try and solve this asap.

Chrissie.

Would someone please give me their thoughts on Thomas and Charlotte being Johns parents with the info that has been found.

A lot of trees on Ancestry have Joseph and Ann, but on checking, the area is totally wrong and no one has provided any source for the info. It looks like everyone has copied the info from one tree.

Although in one of the census records it gives Johns place of birth as Langley, all the others were Mickleover, Kirk Langley is only 3.6 miles from Mickloeover. His baptism did not take place at Langley. The baptism in 1812 which Chris Ho found I believe could very well have been my John's, I would really appreciate your thoughts. I was thinking of discounting it due to placing too much on the use of naming patterns but I'm guessing that the pattern wasn't always used.

Maybe try a free trial on FMP to look at images, or sometimes they have these 'free weekend' offers...
