John Holt, 1809-1879 born Walworth, Surrey.

Recently a small watercolour painting came into the store where I volunteer in B.C. Canada. It is called 'Spring Fishing on the White House Waters' by J. Holt. There was quite a bit of writing on the back of it, so I know that It was owned by Mr. Beresford of the 'Horse and Groom' in Hackney. Mr. Beresford owned that pub from around 1846 to circa 1860. I have been able to trace some of his direct descendants, and have been in contact with them. However, I know very little of John Holt. All I know is that he was living at 2 Orchard Street in Hackney during the 1841 and 1851 census, with his wife, Ellen, 1813- 1885, born in Fulham, Middlesex. They were difficult to find in 1861 as their names were recorded as Halt. John's occupation was then recorded as a House Proprietor /Artist. At that time they were then living in Loddiges Rd. Cambridge Terrace, Hackney alone. In 1871 their daughter, Elizabeth Deacle Holt, 1835-1883 born in Lambeth, Surrey, was with them. She was a teacher of drawing. In both 1851 and 1861 she was living with her aunt, Lucy Griffiths. Interestingly, a book that Elizabeth wrote in 1877 called 'Landscape. How to copy it in Black-lead pencil', is on sale on Amazon Books UK at the moment. As Elizabeth's middle name was Deacle, I suspect that Deacle was her mother's maiden name.

That's all I know about the Holts. I've come up blank. Can any of you please find out more? Thanks.

I am not certain of Ellen's birth date, it's only what I could find online. I know they often vary.

Yes, rootgatherer, her mother Ellen, died two years after Elisabeth.

Can anyone see who the stocks were passed on to after Elizabeth's death?

Is anyone able to find a census prior to 1841 (if there was one) to see who else was in the Holt family. Thanks

Thanks, rootgatherer. Now i have to find who James Phillips is? My problem is that I don't know if John and Ellen Holt had any more children besides Elizabeth. Maybe James Phillips' wife was a Holt?

Rootgatherer,

You have told me that the stock owned by Ellen Holt was transmitted to James Phillips Esq. Is any address given for him? I don't know if Elizabeth Deacle Holt was John and Ellen's only child, but I wonder if he was a son in law, or just a family friend. If he was the latter we'll probably never know.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Interesting find, Potty. Was the spelling 'Holl' a name misspelled, like 'Halt' the spelling of their name in the 1851 census. I'll certainly check into this.

Thank you all so much for all your finds. As I said, we have John Holt's painting at our thrift shop and we'd like it to go to family members in England. It isn't my final decision but it looks like it will go to a direct descendant of Mr. Beresford, as it would seem that there are no direct descendants of Mr. Holt, the artist.

Bless you all for your interest.

Dianne.
