Hi rootgatherer,

William and Lavinia married 22 Dec 1900 at St John's Church so will look that up when I'm next in the archives.

Thank you for your help you have given me lots to work on.

All the best

I don't think the older children are Samuel's. Although Sarah used her maiden surname when she married him, she had been married before.

Here's Hannah's birth

That explains it all good work rootsgatherer,on the marriage to Samuel Wallis she is down as a spinster wonder why she did that instead of say she was a widow.

Thank you so much for all your help

All the best

rootgatherer Report 24 Jul 2017 08:25

Sometimes women claimed to be a spinster if the first husband was still alive and they couldn't afford a divorce but in Sarah's case William seems to have died. Two of my great grandfathers claimed that they were bachelors when they married for a second time but, in fact, both were widowers with a child from their first marriages. Perhaps it was the way the registrar asked the question.

I wonder if I have found the correct marriage for William Mottershaw as Hannah's maiden surname on the children's births is definitely Lambert so either she had been married previously or Fletcher was a stepfather's surname.

Hi rootgatherer,

Thank you for all the info, don't worry to much abt the Mottershaw and Lambert's it the Wallis's I do at the moment but will keep all that info for when I do them.

So going back to the Samuel and Sarah Wallis's children I found on the GRO site a William Wallis born Sept 1880 but mother's surname down as Mellor's cannot find a marriage between a Wallis and Mellors so maybe this is the son of my Samuel and Sarah what do you think.

Firstly, yes I think you have the correct birth for William. Perhaps Samuel registered his birth and gave Sarah's previous married name (Mellors) as her maiden surname rather than Mottershaw.

I have a look for Edwards birth.

Registered in mother's maiden surname
