Hello!

Just posting on the off chance someone else may be investigating a similar part of my tree, I've hit a little bit of a wall. Planning to invest in some certificates soon.

I'm trying to follow my maternal grandmother's line back. Her name was Florence Gertrude Cooper (nee Ruddock), born 1908 in Driffield. I believe I've found her parents, James Ruddock and Laura Foster (although my Aunty swore blind Laura was a Bateman), and believe James's father was Thomas Ruddock, born 1829 in Malton (taking us out of East Yorks, into the North). I'm struggling to confirm his identity however, finding multiple names and not having enough evidence to lock down which one he is. Half the problem is districts/parishes which no longer exist, and having more than one modern equivalent which is equidistant to that location.

I have a similar issue with my grandfather's line, as he was a Cooper and obviously that's a pretty common name! It does look like we've stayed very much in Yorkshire and have a lot of farm labour. Just not quite sure what I can cross-refer now. Have I just reached the point where I need to buy the full certificates?

I've found a few tree matches which could reveal a lot, but most of the members seem to be dormant accounts - or just ignoring me, lol!

I've tried alternate sources - FindmyPast and YorkshireBMD which have helped quite a lot.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Possibly recorded as Thomas Riddick in the 1861 census, Hannah his daughter, is recorded as aged 15 but original image says 5 as the number 7 in the aged of 27 for wife Mary hangs down and looks like a 1 in front of the 5.

They also had son Septimus 1856.

Don't know if we have got the correct Frank Cooper 1903 with brother Septimus 1907,but it seems likely that the above Septimus Bateson is who Septimus Cooper was named after.

If this is the same Thomas Ruddock that married Mary Spencer in 1853, on that marriage record he doesn't name a father but on this one his father is recorded as John Ruddock. It could be that he used the name of his grandfather to hide the fact that he was illegitimate (possibly being the son of Ann Ruddock).

Possible death for 1st wife??
