The probate and increase in value is expected, regardless of what trade they were in. I believe that when any assets (eg a house) are held jointly they automatically go to the surviving partner and are not valued as part of the estate. It is on the death of the surviving partner they would be valued.

With reference to the large increase of money....my great grandparents were in the pub trade. When he died in 1897, he left £570 8s 0d, resworn a year later at £1,170 8s 0d.

When she died in 1922, she left £9,722 15s 6d

Interesting!!
It may be a good idea to get a copy of her will. It may give more information on there.

I do not think it unusual for a landlady of a pub to leave a large amount as when they retire, depending on whether or not they owned the pub, they would probably need to live somewhere ( "by the sea" ). Savings of this size though does surprise.

She certainly made a lot of money after her husband died, didn't she? She left over £17,000.

So it looks like the death in 1914 that I posted was correct and not 1916.

I agree Margaret, just birth date out a bit.

I wonder if the family thought she had another family in Liverpool before or after her marriage to John Frederick Clayton? Since she died still using the Clayton surname it is possible that she just lived with someone else but I don't know how it could be proved.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 5 Aug 2017 21:23

Oh yes, I agree that's her, Kath, but I also think that's her on the 1901 & 1911 census.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 5 Aug 2017 21:20

In the 1871 census (posted above by malyon) she is 1 year old. This means that in April 1871 she was one year old, so she could have had her first birthday anytime between 3rd April 1870 and 2nd April 1871 - which would be consistent with a birth in 1869.

Kath. x

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 5 Aug 2017 21:14

But she also gives place of birth as Wolverhampton and the 1869 birth is the only Mary E. Dudley in Wolverhampton. Ages on the census are often out by one year depending on whether a person's birthday was before or after the census night, but also because people often didn't know when they were born. My grandmother's age is wrong on nearly every census, it is 5 years out on her marriage certificate and 2 years out on her headstone!!

But that certainly looks like her on the 1901 & 1911 censuses, Kath, where she gives birth year of 1871, particularly since she gives daughter Gertrude the middle name Dudley.
