I have had so much difficulty with the Connans from Perth. They all seem to be James or Johns who married Mary's. There are 2 John Connans born 1818 so difficult to know which is in my family.
Anyone having the same troubles??

Not specifically with Perth or Connans, but its certainly happened elsewhere. You get to the point where you just throw up your hands and admit defeat!

Have you tried newspapers for announcements, or Wills?

I have a marriage certificate for James Connan marrying Janet (Jessie) Anderson and his parents show John Connan and Mary (looks like Gourdie or Goudlay)?

This John Connans father is James Maxton Connan and Mary Mcgregor his mother. This is as alviegal has stated.

Then John Connan is the father of James Maxton Connan and mother Margaret McComish.

The monument stated in Chris Ho's message I don't think is my relative.

I suppose the shame is that on the marriage certificate of James and Jessie,the mother's name is not clear reading Gourdie or Goudlay.

Too many James' Johns' and Marys'!

I had a look at James & Jessie / Janet Anderson's marriage cert, (1863 in Collace, Perthshire) and I think his mother's ms is Gourdie (deceased).

I don't see the marriage of his parents, however.

James was 20 when he married, therefore born c 1843.
But I don't see a birth around that time in Perthshire.
And none elsewhere with mother's name Mary [Anything].

In Perthshire, the nearest is John & Janet (Murray)'s son in 1851.

Trying to make sense of all this for myself:

The only John Connan we can see born c1818 is the one who married Janet Murray in 1848.

James c1843 (who married Janet Anderson) , is the son of a John Connon, and as we can only find one John , we assume James 1843 is your John's son by a previous marriage.


I can't see an earlier marriage for John to a Gourdie. The record of his marriage to Janet Murray is a very basic OPR, and doesn't say if he was a widower or not.

I can't see the death of a Mary Gourdie or Connan between 1843 and 1848 in Perthshire. Nor the birth of a Mary Gourdie (or similar) in Perthshire in any reasonable time-frame.
Can't see a Mary Gourdie anywhere in Scotland in 1841.

Can't see John 1818 in the 1841 census.
Can't see James 1843 in the 1851 census.

So no clues re James 1843's mother.

Hello all you helpful people. Hopefully now you can see why I'm a bit confused by it all. My Mums side was so easy but the Connans have not been as well documented.

What you have written alviegal is all correct about the children as far as I know, thank you.

ArgyllGran, as you've said I thought if was Gourdie but no records of her elsewhere! So still a mystery really. Maybe John Connan 1818 did remarry?? Do you think the registry at Perth would help me?

HOWEVER -

as James 1843's birth, and John & Mary G's marriage (if any - perhaps they weren't married) took place prior to 1855, perhaps they just weren't recorded in the parish register.
Also, because it would have been before civil registration, I suspect the Registry Office won't be able to help.
You might have to try the National Records of Scotland, which holds all the old parish registers.

They won't do research for you - you'd have to go to Edinburgh yourself, or hire a researcher, or maybe find a willing volunteer - possibly an Edinburgh-based helper on here might be able to do it.
