	Not many Dibdens in Manchester in the earlier census but plenty in Lancashire. David, do you mean how to trace back from known relatives I. E. Grandparents or great grandparent so please? It may be that the last two or three generations hailed from Manchester but previous generations came from elsewhere. As PricklyHolly says, give us some names and dates and we may be able to point you in the right direction.

	A search on Freebmd for Dibden births, marriages or deaths in Manchester shows this as the earliest Marriages Jun 1909 (>99%) DIBDEN John Standen Manchester 8d 313 The number of entries increase from 1909 and that would suggest that those Manchester Dibdens came from elsewhere in the country. The above man, although married in Manchester was born in Preston Dec 1876 (>99%) DIBDEN John Standing Preston 8e 541 He was lodging in Manchester in 1901 with his future wife's family 1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription 22, Enoch Street, City, North Manchester, Prestwich, Lancashire, England Jane Meadowcroft Head Widow Female 57 1844 - Southport, Lancashire, England Albert Meadowcroft Son Single Male 28 1873 Reed Maker Manchester, Lancashire, England Annie Meadowcroft Daughter Single Female 23 1878 Cotton Winder Manchester, Lancashire, England John Dibden Boarder Single Male 24 1877 Commission Agent Preston, Lancashire, England
