I wonder if anyone can help - I can find a marriage on FREEBMD for Robert Durrant to Olivia Ottaway in 1853 in Elham but cannot find anything on FMP or Ancestry - not sure if I am doing something wrong?

You can buy an m.cert from the GRO or also from the local reggistration district that now holds the rego's or copies thereof.
(You can also buy recent m.certs from the church that performed the marr if it's inn their current rego.
Completed church rego's are deposited in some archive - usually the county record office.)

For Kent, we need to look up the names on the GRO index page - we get:

We can match "Entry Numbers" to see who wed whom.
The web site does't decode S14 into a church name - S prefixes often indicate synagogues.
The /2 indicates this is the 2nd rego for church S14.

Kent RD now covers all of historic Kent except for the Medway towns and Greater London.
