I am very grateful for your help. Until recently I have been living in Spain and relying on official government sites for information which are only helpful up to a point. Even so I had found out quite a lot about this part of the family, so I know that both St Joseph, Ancoats and St Peter, Greengate were associated' Matthew and Mary lived first in Angel Meadow but then moved up in life and lived in a marginally less notorious slum across the Irwell in Greengate. However, until now I had no knowledge of what happened to Mary, though I strongly suspected she had died, possibly in or after childbirth. So the information you've given me has finally answered those questions. Next project I think will be trying to flesh out Matthew's life before he arrived in England.

Ian - I think the Latinized form Mariae (with its various case endings) will only appear in RC parish rego's.

You might consider buying the official m.cert:

I presume this was an RC marr, not a rego office job. The m.cert would then show which church it took place in, and you could see if their marr rego was available somewhere.
Just because they weren't approved to keep an official marr rego, it doesn't follow that they didn't keep their own marr rego - which could show difft details.

There are really just a couple of cautions with Latinized names.
James is Latinized as Jocobi and William is Latinized as Gulielmi (with various case endings).
Anglo-Saxon had case endings (as does modern German), but English just has 2 case endings - the 's for the possessive case, and nothing for everything else.
Modern pronouns do exhibit cases - I, me, my, mine, myself, etc.

Your contribution, like the two previous replies I received, is really helpful. I knew John's birth was never registered. Not only that but he went through most of his life believing he had been born in 1870.
Winfred's existence is completely new to me, but perhaps helps to explain her mother's death. It's also interesting because John had a daughter called Winifred, who also died in childhood.

Non-conformists (excl jews and quakers) could not be approved to keep official marr rego's until 1898, so a registrar would need to attend a non-conformist marr with his official rego for the couple to sign to complete the ceremony.
The law changed in 1898, but RCs chose not to apply to become approved persons until 1980-ish (a bit earlier in Lancs).

Thank you. Plenty of detail to chew on. One complication is that Lanagan and its variants is a fairly common surname, and Mary/Marie/Maria are also common. What is certain though is the Barrows Court, Greengate address and the birth date of 1830.

Thank you for this.. It looks very promising as the church is the Roman Catholic cathedral and the family were Catholics. I knew there were different spellings of Lanigan that were used. It hadn't occurred to me that I needed to consider spelling variants of Mary.

My great grandmother, Mary Lanigan, née Riley, was born in Wigan in 1830 (approx). In 1858 she married Matthew Lanigan/Lanagan b.1825.. They lived first of all in Beswick Roq, Angel Meadow, Manchester and later in Barrows Court, Greengate, Salford and had six children.
The whole family is listed at the same address in the 1871 census, but has split up by 1881. The three oldest children are by then independent but the three youngest, Marcella, John and Matthias were living in industrial schools/orphanages. Matthew was apparently living in Leeds, but appears in the 1891 census as a widower visiting his son Joseph. Of Mary there is no trace after 1871. All the indications would point to her having died sometime during the 1870s but I can find no record of the death of a Mary Lanigan with approximately the correct year of birth (1825).
Can anyone help?
