I am looking for any record of a James McNeill,b.c.1823,Ireland.On ancestry various trees say he was married to a Mary Mairs. One tree, however, says he may have been married twice? There a quite a few Scottish records of a Mary McNeill and her family

Unfortunately, James McNeill is a very common name - there could be lots of them born about the same time.

Looking for the trees you mention - generally speaking, don't trust anything on trees!

for our reference -

One says he was born 1828, in Bushmills, and claims this is proof of that:

James McNeill Sr
in the UK and Ireland, Find A Grave Index, 1300s-Current
Name: James McNeill Sr
Birth Date: 1828
Birth Place: Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Death Date: 12 Jan 1886
Death Place: Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Cemetery: Billy Parish Churchyard
Burial or Cremation Place: Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Has Bio?: N
Spouse: Margaret Jane McNeill
Children: Margaret McNeill
James McNeill

The tree says Margaret Jane was his second wife. 1841 - 12/05/1918 Bushmills.
Children born 1865-75 in Bushmills. No marriage date given.

Mary Mairs 1826 Ireland - 19/01/1905 Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire.
The tree doesn't give their marriage date, so I assume James's name has been found from a child's birth record. Apparently all their children were born in Ireland, 1846-61, one in Londonderry and others in unspecified placed in Ireland
.
Then Mary appears on Scottish censuses 1871 - 1901, but she's already a widow.

That doesn't fit with him supposedly having died in 1886 - must be a different James, unless James & Mary had separated, and she just claimed to be a widow on the censuses..

Thanks to all for replies.Seems a bit of a mystery? The Mary in the Scottish Census
has children that seem to tie in with later members, that I know about, in the McNeill family.
I will keep looking.
All the best,Terry L.

Look at the inscription info on findagrave, it seems obvious that this man has no connection to Mary Mairs or the family in Port Glasgow

His death was registered in Ballymoney

D/1886/28/1005/5/114
James McNeill 12th January 1886 58 Male Ballymoney(pre-1973 Q4)

The stone also states that wife named Margaret Jane did not die until 1918

However:
Births for children named Margaret and Charles listed on inscription all match to a mother named Dinsmore
Marriage:
M/1864/O1/1925/1/81 Margret Dinsmore / McNeil 10th June 1864 Moyle
M/1864/O1/1925/1/81 James McNeil Dinsmore 10th June 1864 Moyle

Just had a look at some of the trees at Ancestry. There are some real 'corkers'!!!

Quote: Archibald McNeill was born in 1847 father James was 13 and mother Mary was 21 at the time of his birth
