I am searching for a friend. Her uncle Robert Alexander was the son of Alexander Alexander (Scotland).

Robert, through his work, moved to Singapore. We know he fathered a child (with a Chinese) whilst there. He returned to Scotland and married. My friend is also trying to find out if we can research the child born in Singapore.

An Ancestry message board thread suggests that records from before Singapore became independent will be held in Malaysia.

Another post says that many records were destroyed by the Japanese during WW2.

I haven't yet found anything official to back up these suggestions.

EDIT:
another post says that many Malaysian children did not (and even now do not) have registered birth certificates.

I suppose it would depend on whether Robert took any responsibility for the child, and if its birth was registered in any way with British authorities there. If he didn't, then chances are there was no birth registered.

Does your friend know if the child was given the name Alexander, or the mother''s surname?

Roughly when was the child born?
