You won't find 1847 records online

Have you looked on the 1851 census

MargaretM Report 23 Sep 2017 12:37

The 1841 census has 2 pages of names who give the address as Pleasance 34, Edinburgh, St. Cuthberts.
Also 6 pages of 154 Pleasance.

Here is access to a Post Office Directory for Edinburgh & Leith in 1846 / 7.

You will have to go through it page by page to find the address you are looking for.

I have had a quick look and it is a bit complicated but the name Grant in that area seems to start on page 66. There is a 'Pleasance' address on that page but that is for a Mr. Grandison at No. 125 but, as you know who you are looking for, you might like to give it a go and I am sure you will find something useful with a 'lot' of patience ;-)

Best of luck,

Thank you
I didn't think it would be easy
as for the 41 or 51 census I'd have to know a person living their and nothing has shown up for my couple
It was worth a try

In the 1846-7, and 1847-48 PO Directories, J Rettie, grocer, was at 34 Pleasance.
However, the directory only lists tradespeople, professionals, property owners, etc., not the ordinary huddled masses (which is what they would have been in the Edinburgh tenements of that time).
J Rettie would have had his shop on the ground floor, but above him there would have been large numbers of people living in pretty squalid conditions, over several floors.

No 154 is listed under Hatters Close, but apparently didn't have anyone of the appropriate social or economic standing, as nobody's listed.

James Rettie is on the 1841 census (don't see him in 1851 in St Cuthberts area of Edinburgh), but of course it only shows his own household, not all the others in the building.

I've had a look at the census image on Scotland's People, and his entry in 1841 shows his home address was in Carnegie Street , which runs more or less parallel to the Pleasance.

It must have been just his shop that was at 34 Pleasance, and therefore no help in seeing any neighbours.
