We have my f-i-l's record of service in the Royal Navy in WW2 .................... it doesn't tell us much.

Basically it is one sheet listing vessels, dates service started and ended on each vessel, and record of behaviour. It was filled in and then handed to the sailor as he left a ship to be handed to the Captain of the next ship.

OH remembers more of what his dad did and where he served ...... and he was just a toddler when his dad went away.

Before you order, you may want to have a read of JoyLouise's post on this thread

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/military_chat/thread/1183513?d=desc

"After I had already spoken to a gentleman who informed me that their records did not show all of the information regarding a sailor's service as that was handed to the departing sailor, I was told that it may not be worthwhile paying £30 for information they held that would, in all likelihood, reveal nothing much at all."

If they are anything like the ones up to & including WW1, they're mainly a list of vessels or establishments the sailor served on and the relevant dates. Shore based facilities were prefixed by HMS but weren't floating!

World war 2 service records are still with the MOD and are not online. Have a look here to see how to order them:-

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

They cost £30 and sometimes take several months to arrive.

I am trying to find my uncle's war record. He was called up at the beginning of WW2. He was in the Royal Navy and the only think I know is that he was wounded while serving in the Bay of Biscay. He was born in Bath in 1919. Hi father (d. 1936) was William Russell and his mother was Patience Nell Russell nee Butcher.

Can you point me in the right direction.
