Afraid as it's Scotlands People so can't look at the marriage
Think though official registration didn't start till 1855 in Scotland so maybe that's a parish record and to do with what the religion that they married in

There are a couple of things to understand Jack.

Firstly, marriage by proclamation was completely acceptable in Scotland in the time period.
They were basically cohabiting but so long as they both declared it in front of a witness, ( often the local Church Minister), they were fully accepted by the church as husband and wife.
My ancestors were also "proclaimed" as married, 2 days before the birth of their 1st child.
No doubt, the Minister paid them a visit in relation to the impending birth.!

Secondly, Jane, Jean and Jeanie are all interchangeable names.
Any version could be used at any time.
There was rarely any uniformity !

It looks to me that the child was born on 14 Nov 1819 and baptised on 5 Dec 1819.
The birth name is shown as Jean

There is only one entry on SP.
The baptismal index only ever shows one of the dates but you will need to obtain this OPR entry to clarify exactly what it says.

Pre 1855 entries are actually Baptismal Records.
They often include a birth date but, this depended how good the clerk was at record keeping.
Unless the child was baptised, there was no other form of recording a birth

There is no entry ,anywhere in Scotland for a child named Jane, born to this couple in 1819.
Where did you find the Nov Date?

Hi,, Thank you for the replies. Re the jean /Jane thing. My mother was Jane on her birth certificate but I only knew her as JEAN, until she died and I saw her birth certificate.
Re the Stevenson s etc. Yes I saw the birthdate as 05/12/1819 in Neilston. But who did she marry?? Scotlands people only show the bride and groom name on an OPR list. No parents to confirm correct person involved. And thank you for the clarification of the Marriage/ declaration item.
