From old occupation site Mel:-

Carman/Charman/Carrier/
Carter/Cartman

Driver of (horse-drawn) vehicles for transporting goods. Carmen were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels. Modern day van driver. A Carter typically drove a light two wheeled carriage. Also sometimes someone who drove horse-drawn trams was called a Carman.

Thanks Mel.

You are probably correct in saying Carver, as he did deal in woodwork etc.

Having said that, 'Carman' is an actual job! Nothing to do with cars as we know of today, but a sort of removals / transporter of goods. (Sort of but not quite Steptoe & Son way of transport)!!

Just a little note.

On Kathleen and safc's post of the baptism of Margaret Wood 1792 her father is down on their posts as a Carman but to my mind it should be CARVER as I don't think they had cars of any kind in those days.

Thanks Mel & Malyon for the info.

Mel, I am surprised to see another possible child - Sarah Elizabeth Wood b 1807.

The parents names are correct, as is the church. I wonder if there are other children in between? - And how do I find out?????

Or this marriage?

Name: Thomas Wood
Gender: Male
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 10 Apr 1787
Marriage Place: St George in the East, Tower Hamlets, England
Spouse: Sarah Chitty
Register Type: Parish Register

If Mary Wood was born in Dec 1887 then this marriage looks more likely as its just about 9 months till her birth.

I am trying to find birth / baptism as well as parents of Margaret Wood b about 1790.

In 1851 Census, she says she comes from St. George's in the East, Middlesex / London.

She marries Francis Finegan at St. George in the East in 1816, so I presume a local girl?

Any clues?

Thanks......
