DREW and DELVE on census

AnneRachel Report 11 Oct 2017 04:12

Please can anybody help find this family on census.

I have the death cert. For William Henry Drew, died 15 Aug 1901 in Auckland, New Zealand. Aged 57 years. Born Gloucester. Parents William Drew, labourer; and Mary Delve.

William Drew married Mary Delve 17 Apr 1843 @ Twerton, Bath, UK; both full age; bachelor, labourer; spinster; fathers William Drew labourer and John Delve carpenter; witness’ Richard Abrahams and John Penney (the latter a profesional witness signed many marriages)

A birth in Q1 1844 William Henry Drew, Clifton Reg. Distr., Gloucestershire is almost certainly my man (but I do not hold the cert)

I know William Henry Drew emigrated to Australia before 1864, and he married in NZ in 1866. He must surely be on the 1851 census of England, probably 1861 also. His parents should be on 1841 census before marriage, then hopefully in 1851 also. But I cannot locate them.

Note: a 9 yr old William Henry Drew appears in Bristol on 1851 census, but another William Henry Drew birth was registered in Clifton district in 1842, and I believe this is him. Where is the second William Henry who was born 1844?

I would appreciate some help with this one. Thanks in anticipation.
Anne

Thanks Shirley. I had not realized that mmn was available here. Yes it is likely a transcription error.

It's a facility on the gro site to 1911 when mmn is shown on the index

Do you have any idea of ages for his parents or details of when they died please?

No, unfortunately not. Just the marriage details which say both William and Mary full age, and neither previously married.

This John Delve is a Carpenter but in Devon?

A tree on ancestry has that marriage certificate attached to the record of Mary Delve born 1818

Dea

Dea Report 11 Oct 2017 12:43

I think that tree is probably mistaken as there is a Mary Delve baptised in 1818 with father John who is a Blacksmith and he can be found on census married to Anne.

He is a different one to the John who is a Carpenter.

He should be on above.

(W H Drew on above, September 1866, is that before his Marriage, if him)

Yes thanks Chris, that is our William Henry in 1866, it is after the April 1866 marriage (I don’t have the cert but I believe the details of an online tree). He crossed between NZ and Sydney several times; children born 1867 NZ, 1869 Sydney, 1871 and thereafter NZ. Plenty of evidence of his places of residence in NZ. It is his origins in England that I am searching for.

Dea – I agree that Mary 1818 is not the one I seek.

I really think the Drew family in Horfield, 1851, as found by Choccy, is the correct one. Can’t find any other children born to this marriage. Nor a likely death for either William Drew ~1816 or Mary Drew ~1811. And if William did not know his birthplace, I wonder if he really knew who his father was?

As for John Delve carpenter, he may be the one, but I can’t see anything to link him to our Mary. As she was born in Devon, it is likely (but not certain) that her father was from Devon. But we don’t know if her father was still alive in 1841. So even if this John Delve is the only carpenter born Devon as recorded in 1841, that does not prove that he is our man.

Thanks so much to all who have taken an interest in this search, it’s really appreciated.

Thinking about that Chris. The marriage cert would confirm his age and birthplace and parent's names. But I am not sure that it would tell me anything new.

And what about the birth cert 1844 England. Would that give more details of his parents?

Chris Ho :) Report 14 Oct 2017 08:44

(would give his Mother Maiden Name (which is on above, posted) an Address, and occ. of Father, as well as his Birthdate, useful to know, but wouldn't help with things Mary/Delve family)

Chris :)
