Have just noticed your crucial sentence about what Alison was training to be!

As Chris says, perhaps the image of the 1901 census would tell you - or the 1911, only available on ScotlandsPeople.


In 1911 she's back in Mains, and still unmarried.
So maybe a teacher?

A gold medal has been awarded, at the Sydney International Exhibition, to Mr. George Cochrane, 10 East Adam Street, Edinburgh, for his case of exhibits containing specimens and drawings of grained stippled transfer paper, taken from stippled plates, showing the advantages of grained paper in place of grained stones in lithographic drawing and colour printing.
