Just also noticed in 1871 census ( Mary ) Bridgett Powell ( Stanley ?!!) was born in Birmingham ?! Not stoke on trent

Emma

Emma Report 24 Oct 2017 20:40

On the 1861 census Bridgett is stated as birth place Fenton SOT ?!?! Not Birmingham as stated 1871 census

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 25 Oct 2017 06:51

I think Birmingham is more likely correct as Birmingham is also stated as her place of birth in 1851.

Plus in 1841, when the family were living in Stoke upon Trent, Bridget and her brother are listed as NOT born in County Staffordshire.

Emma

Emma Report 25 Oct 2017 22:06

Do you think it possible they changed it to Stanley once in Birmingham & then Stoke to sound less Irish ?

Emma

Emma Report 25 Oct 2017 22:08

So Margaret Tomlin or Tomblin as on the censuses was really Margaret smith. (?) wonder where Tomblin came from :-(

01 July 1854 - Staffordshire Sentinel and Commercial & General Advertiser

One last thing for tonight don't know a whole lot about Irish immigration but was the potatoe famine around 1820s 1830s wonder if Bridget & Michael possibly left Ireland because of that (??!) im guessing there may not be ship passenger registers for this? :-(

Emma

Emma Report 25 Oct 2017 23:30

Wrong era

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 26 Oct 2017 06:22

Yes Emma- Margaret's maiden name looks to have been Smith.

Margaret was never called Tomlin/ Tomblin- somebody had just mistranscribed the 1871 census. On the original image, her name is Scanlin.

Emma

Emma Report 26 Oct 2017 09:04

Oh I see - thank you !!

Rambling

Rambling Report 26 Oct 2017 11:07

Emma, yes a bit early for the potato famine, but a lot of Irish did come here for work.
There won't be passenger lists unfortunately.

Re the name differences, enumerators on the census etc would put down the name they 'heard', and as many people at that time would have been illiterate the person would probably have not known themselves how their name was spelled.

Also remember that some of the records found will be transcriptions from original images which may be faded or indistinct, or the handwriting difficult to read.

Emma

Emma Report 26 Oct 2017 16:41

Nyx - thank you I get what you mean - quite an eye opener then the person not really even knowing there last name. I guess strong accents influenced how something was written down too. I still don't really know now how to take the step backwards and look for Micheal Stanley's ( ?!! ) parents, simply because of the last name spelling & interpretation.

I can't see a marriage, but then again we don't know where it took place,

as the baptisms of children were at St Chads, you could try an enquiry as to whether the records might show a marriage for Michael & Margaret?

"Please contact the Archivist at St Chad’s for these records. Contact: The Rev. John Sharp, Archivist, Cathedral House, St. Chad's Queensway, Birmingham B4 4EU. Tel: 0121 230 6252. Email: [email protected] "

Even so it may not give parents names. if you want to try searching for a marriage in Dublin, you might have to work through the various parishes and likely years on https://registers.nli.ie/
