Find Ancestors

I am trying to find Nellie Duffy. She was born in Armagh N.I in 1894 and married John Duffy in 1912 in Dublin and they had 5 children the last one born in 1924 in Dublin. We know they went to the USA via Canada after the birth of their last child and left them in Dublin. Please help me find her. We have traced her children and they were estranged from their mother. John Duffy came back to the UK and remarried in 1941/42. We don't believe she came back to the UK.

Shows birth of Helen Galashan 26th May 1894 at Carleton Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh to Alexander Galashan a Druggist and Rebecca Carlisle Galashan nee McConnell.

Shows marriage 23 February 1912 South Dublin of Nellie Josephine Galashan aged 18 to John Duffy. She is daughter of Alexander Galashan a Chemist.
(Just a bit shy of 18 actually)

(Ancestry trees have a DOB as 10 October 1893 (at the Dublin marriage address !!))

John Duffy second marriage cert should give his marital status at the time of marriage

It should indicate if he was a widower or divorced

It's possible too he may say batchelor which may indicate a bigamous marriage if he left his wife in the USA

John Duffy married Ivy Victoria Westall in 1941 in Hendon

A John Duffy married Ann Westall in 1941 Hendon.

I don't see a marriage to Ivy. If you have the certificate can you please post details- was John listed as widower or Bachelor?.

It looks like John and Ann may have had children before their marriage (first in 1931).

Are you sure that John Duffy and Nellie both went to USA?

From the marriage cert of 1912,Johns father was Augustine Duffy a brick Layer, John also a Bricklayer.

There is a passenger list of arrival in New York from Southhampton of John Duffy age 41 years, arrived 01 October 1928 he is listed as SINGLE a Bricklayer and gave last person to know him as father Augustine Duffy Richmond Hill Dublin.

The person who John was travelling to was his Brother Augustine in New York. The 1930 New York Census has Augustine Duffy listed as a Bricklayer with wife there is no John living with them at this time.

The 1911 census in Ireland shows both sons with family.

How do you know that John and Nellie travelled through Canada to US ? there are 3 Trees on Ancestry none of which show passenger list of John but all other info you give included. Looks like John and Nellie may have split before he went to US!

Most of my information is by way of different family members, which is not always reliable. My niece, Susan Duffy daughter of John Duffy b. 1932, has copies of her father's birth certificate and the marriage of John Duffy and Ann Westall both of which state that John is a bachelor.

In passing, on the 1930 New York Census does it list any children of Augustine and his wife.

There are no children with Augustin and his wife Kate on the 1930 census. He's still single in 1920.

On Augustin's arrival in USA, 1913 he gives name of his father Augustin, 18 Charlemont Place, Dublin. He's going to join friend Martin Fulleping.

Augustine Duffy married in 25 th April 1910 in Dublin an Esther Kelly they had a son Augustine born March 1912 who died aged 13yrs in 1926 address Richmond Hill, same address that John Duffy gave in 1928 for his father.

Looks like Augustine also declared he was single on the passenger list in 1913, he then married in New York 1914 declared not married before, and again in 1920.
