Hi all,

Just thought I'd let you know that I received the death record for Henry Long died Islington Infirmary 9/10/1891 - registered 10/10/1891 - buried 12/10/1891 but this isn't my Henry.

This Henry was a shoemaker - journeyman and my Henry was a retired gamekeeper so I am back to square one again.

Thank you for that info. I will look into it today.

A quick look at the "other 65" burials - they date from 14 Sept. to 3 Dec. 1891

Picking out a few to look at the individual entry -
ages range from days to old
some addresses are private, some workhouse.

The grave reference is M/Poor/17400

This looks to be a Pauper's grave, with many interments, used until full

Hello all,
I didn't know George 1852 existed either.

I have the 1871 and 1881 Census but couldn't find 1861.
The 1851 Census shows him (age 20) at home with parents Edward and Elizabeth - Bladon, Woodstock, Oxforshire.

I wonder why Jane Elizabeth wasn't on the 1871 Census?

I couldn't find any birth record for wife Hannah so don't know who parents were.

I think I'll have to get some certificates.

Maybe there was an epidemic of something about 1891 for him to be buried with 65 others.

Will order the DC today and see what it says.

Can anyone tell me if I order a certificate as PDF can I print it out? It takes 6-8 weeks by post to Australia.

Thank you all so much for all the new info you have given me so far..I am amazed at some of it and now wonder how much more I don't know.

Edited !

Henry might not necessarily have been in the workhouse, but in the Infirmary attached to the workhouse. It may have been the only option for medical care for him.

Marj Report 13 Nov 2017 08:52

HI all, I am having a bit of trouble trying to fit it all together. My Henry was a game keeper and lived all his life with wife Hannah (Lockey) in Oxfordshire and the 1881 Census has the parish as Steeple Barton.

I just don't have an older daughter Jane Elizabeth. Henry's children were:-
Edwin b.1859
Frederick b.1861
Jesse b.1864
Alfred b.1866
Fanny b.1868

Maybe he has more children that I wasn't aware of or maybe I have the 1891 census mixed up with another Henry Long.
I can't imagine what he was doing in a workhouse as was financially able to support himself according to family stories I've heard.

I am somewhat confused at the moment.

I have found that ages on death certificates are often out by a year or two as the informant isn't always sure of the exact year of birth. It would be worth ordering the certificate to see who the informant was.

I am looking for the death place/date for Henry Long b.13/5/1831 - Coombe, Oxfordshire. In the 1891 Census he was visiting a family named Narh in Islington, England with his daughter Fanny. Fanny then married 29/5/1897 to Richard Nichol and the ML states Henry as deceased.

GRO only has a few deaths 1891 - 1897 Islington - most are too old and one too young (59yr). He may have died elsewhere and there are heaps of Henry Long on the register but I don't know which would be my Henry.

I would appreciate any help offered. Thank you
