I'm trying to find the birth and parents of Elizabeth Drake. She married William Vere(Vear) in 1796 in Newton Ferrers, Devon. They had two children, Mary b. 1801 and William b.1805. There are probably more but these are the only ones I've found. I would really like to find Elizabeth's parents. |

Working back from this birth for Elizabeth I found a baptism for James (father) for 20 Oct 1757 with parents John & Joan. I also found a marriage for John Drake and Joan Penwill in 1755. On the banns for this marriage (in findmypast) it gives the names with something that looks like Jun? printed after each of their names. Any suggestions what that might mean. |

The word looks like Junr to me. Obviously now that would mean Junior, as in the parent was also called this name. |

Just come in to this one and had a look at the banns. |

Thanks everyone. I too wondered if it meant junior - it does have a question mark after it and that threw me too. I will take the suggestion and email the records office. Stay tuned. |

Your question mark may well be a full stop after Jun. with an r above it - a recognised abbreviation for Junior |

I sent off an email to the devonfhc (thanks safc) and they got right back to me ... I was quite impressed. The lady at first thought it meant junior but had never seen it used for a daughter before. She thinks it has a colon, but she's going to talk to some of her co-volunteers tomorrow and also look at the old handwriting book to see if that helps at all. |

The more I look at it, I think you might be right greyghost - it does look like a full stop with an r above it. |

I heard back from the devonfhc and they say that everyone agrees it's junior, and all are a little perplexed about the junior attached to the bride's name. They think it would be interesting to know if the mother's name was Joan. |

Joan's baptism already posted as a possible. A marriage at 16 would not be unusual. |

Thanks greyghost. Where did you find Joan's baptism ... I could only find the others. |
