Hi Ian, that action in SA probably resulted in a divorce.*

The later marriage certificate in England would show whether the person reported as having a previous marriage dissolved by divorce.

* for random examples of "illiquid cases" that were actually divorce actions, see here:
http://www.wellbelove.org/south-africa-divorce.html

and for an explanation, see here:
http://www.ancestors.co.za/frequently-asked-questions/

"What does Illiquid Case mean?
An illiquid case is a court action where there is no monetary claim or the amount of the monetary claim is not pre-determined or easily calculated. A divorce is often an illiquid case. Often in a divorce settlement, one party will receive mostly illiquid assets, including the home, while the other party receives liquid assets such as retirement plans, etc…"

So rather than what I said earlier, the record I posted was probably a divorce action itself, initiated by Phyllis.
