Hi George

If it is your William Keate that arrived in Tasmania on the Earlgrey in 1842 he was granted his Certificate of Freedom in 1849 as mentioned in the Cornwall Chronicle Tasmania 11th August 1849 (2nd column about halfway down)
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/65976822?searchTerm=%22william%20keate%22&searchLimits=l-decade=184|||l-state=Tasmania

This meant that William was free to travel Australia and not remain confined to Tasmania (which he would have to do if he only received a ticket of leave). He could also have returned to the UK if he wanted and could afford to!

A lot of time has been spent on this for you. Australian Convict Records are very good indeed and that is the way to find out what you are looking for.

This record has been posted on both of LettyLoo's previous threads;

Wm Keate
in the New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849
Name: Wm Keate
Arrival Date: 1843
Vessel: Earlgrey
Province: Tasmania
Title: Ledger Returns A - R
Year(s): 1846
Place of Conviction: C C CT

What hasn't been mentioned is that the image says he was in a Probation Gang in 1846.

Not that that helps with what happened to him after his court appearances in 1848.

LettyLoo Report 2 Feb 2018 18:07

He was born William H Keyte in 1824 Clerkenwell London. In July 1842 he was sentence at the Old Baily to 7 years imprisonment for embezzlement . He was deported to Tasmania Oct 1842 in the name of William Keate and arrived 1843.

It is my understanding that William Keate received his ticket of leave. Is there anybody who may be able to help in ascertaining what became of him once he was freed.

With thanks

George
