Emma Report 2 Feb 2018 21:21

Hi I’m looking for information on a George Henry Costins, possibly born as Bullock. According to census he was born at Newport Monmouthshire to a Elizabeth Costins. He resided in Cheltenham, Gloucester 1871-1901 then remained in Armley Leeds untill his death in 1925. His wife was a Harriett Kemmett and they had 5 children.
George James, Lillie Harriet, Edith, Albert Charles and Eva Annie. I have George and his family located from 1871-1925 but have no definite proof of his parentage and according to the 71 census his ‘mother’ was his ‘Aunt’ and he was George Bullock but by 81 she was listed as his mother and he was George Costins, so who knows any help or information would be most appreciated as he is a massive brick wall for me.

Thank you, yes that’s the right George ?? Caroline Florence is one of his mothers sisters illegitimate children and Ann Costins is also another one of his mother sisters who married a Charles Bullock but they emigrated to Canada around 1857/58 with their children so I do believe she may have lied about who he was in 71 census, I’m unsure whether Elizabeth is definitely his mother, it is possible he belonged to one or her sisters as Caroline Florence belonged to Caroline Costins and John Harding but was brought up by another Costins family member. Such a confusing family! I have found a birth certificate for the right time and place under Costins but it lists Henry James Costins 1861 Newport, Elizabeth Beavington and Henry Costins as parents, I haven’t been able to locate them or any marriage etc though so i do wonder if it’s possible that Elizabeth went to Wales to conceal the birth and then lied on the certificate.
