You can find some information in Newspapers (Findmypast has some and I imagine Ancestry have too).

Trade directories can sometimes help.

Depends on location I would say, both FMP and Ancestry have Parish records for different areas. Most of us use many sites not just one, and make as much use of free sites as the subscription ones.

Google what's available for the counties you're interested in. There are lots of individual pages for towns and villages online.
