Victoria,
if you want to find more info on James Brennan, as said before, you must buy a copy of the marriage certificate. It will give you his age, his occupation, his father's name (if known) and his father's occupation. It will also give you his address at the time of marriage and witnesses names.
There are so many possible births for him, without it anything found will be just speculation.
If you do buy it, once you have it come back to this thread and post all the information you can see on it and we can try and find other information for you.

Yes, I realised after I posted the reply.

Bit of overlap with the photo being dated to 1901 as well though.

(not there 1901, as said above, was Alfred Carr)

Thanks!

I thought it must be him, because of the Whitelock's connection, the family seem to have run most of the pubs in Leeds. :)

I'm trying to find out about James prior to his marriage to Selema. I was hoping he might be at the Yorkshire Hussar in the 1901 or 1911 census', but I can't find the records. :-D

(well a coincidence there then Mary, lol, and below very good for Whitelock side, with images of Birth Certs.)

(Archives would probably have more info. regarding 'Yorkshire Hussar')

Selina Mathers nee Best her mum was Mary Ann Whitelock born @ 1854 sister to William Henry Whitelock.
So it looks likely that is the correct James Brennan.

86 York Street, Leeds, was the 'Yorkshire Hussar' Public House, from a newspaper snippet 1878, there 1881 was William H Whitelock (Publican)

At 86, for 1901 was Alfred Carr (Publican)

Chris :)

Edits (seems William Henry Whitelock was son of John Lupton Whitehead, of Turk's Head, Briggate, accoding to google search)

The Yorkshire Hussar on Eastgate was built after 1930, so was not the same pub.

As it used the same name, it seems likely that the York Street pub had closed.

Catherine

Catherine Report 8 Feb 2018 22:27

From closedpubs.co.uk

The Yorkshire Hussar was situated at 46 Eastgate. This pub was later used as Hoagys Bar, which in turn has also closed.

so according to this site the pub was not on York Street.

I've also found a picture of a Leeds Pub- The Yorkshire Hussar which is dated 1901, and has a sign which says 'James Brennan, The Yorkshire Hussar, Ales, Wines and Spirits'.

Selema's family has many landlords and ladies in it, so I thought this might be the James Brennan that she married. But I can't find the 1901 or 1911 census for the pub.

The Yorkshire Hussar was on York Street Leeds, and backed on to Brussels Street.

I don't have the marriage certificate.

I got the marriage details using freebmd.org.uk and http://yorkshirebmd.org.uk.

But they don't include father's name, or witness info etc.

only a possible

Name James Brennan
Residence Place Gateshead, Durham, England
Gender Male
Christening Date 05 Aug 1877

there are lots more born in Ireland so I think you really need to buy the marriage cert. so you can eliminate some of them.

Victoria

Victoria Report 8 Feb 2018 20:37

I think this may be his death:

James Brennan
59
Jun Qtr 1936
Leeds South, Yorkshire West Riding, England

Selema and Yvonne appear together on the 1939 census, but James isn't with them, so it's likely that he died before this date.
