Here we go Richard Walton was my grandfathers brother he emigrated to Canada after the war sometime in late 40's or early 50's, he was born in Hull 1898. Nobody remembers his wifes name and I can't find a marriage not in Yorkshire anyway. I'm told he had children when he went there but details are vague.
I don't know what area of Canada either my gran said she thought Quebec but again I'm not sure. If anyone can help it would be great.Richards parents were Thomas and Minnie Walton nee Sowerby. Thank you :-)

His birth registration - could have been born anytime mid February to end of June as 6 weeks was allowed for registration.

Do you know his DOB? Or where he was living in 1939 in case he's listed on the 1939 register.

ArgyllGran Report 9 Feb 2018 13:03

There are lots of Richard Waltons on the Canadian ERs, but of course without ages or origins, and none in Quebec.

I don't see his death in Canada - but it may be too recent to be shown online. Canada has stricter rules than the UK does.

I don't see an emigration record - but he may have flown, in which case there won't be an online record.

As far as marriages are concerned - what time frame are you considering?

For instance, there's this one -

Richard Walton
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005
Name: Richard Walton
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1920
Registration district: Guisborough
Inferred County: Yorkshire North Riding
Spouse: Mary H Dunning
Volume Number: 9d
Page Number: 1246

Or he may not have married in Yorkshire.
Impossible to know.

There doesn't seem to be a death in UK for that Emily I Walton, unless it is leaving out her middle initial. Might be worth buying the marriage cert?

You can order a 'dealth printout' (less expensive than a death certificate) for

1963/25863 Walton Emily Isabella 65Y

from:

https://tinyurl.com/y88p8qqz

(link to NZ search form, the search result gives you the 'order product' option)

or an English death certificate for Richard.

One of them might name a child as the informant.

This is the info that should be on a NZ death certificate, if it was known the person who registered the death:

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/dataCollected/death

-- very detailed, including info about parents, spouse and children.

Nyx, the 3 children of the marriage were born in the 1920s, so if the couple emigrated after 1945, one or more of them may well have remained in England, and that was why Richard was there when he died after his wife's death in NZ.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Feb 2018 06:48

Assuming this is the correct couple, all 3 children seem to have married in Leeds. I see chidren for only one of those marriages.

All 3 of the couple's children are in several trees here at GenesReunited.

They are almost surely deceased by now, so search trees here for

Joyce 1922
Marjorie 1924
Emily 1927

born in Leeds.

There is a tree on Ancestry that has photographs of both and info matching their deaths...but his parents are shown as William and Mary Ann.

So maybe not the right one?

Hi
Thanks to everyone that replied about Richard Walton I'll keep digging anyway and I'll definitely try look for him on 1939 census. Maybe he did marry somewhere else? He had relatives in Lancashire and Hartlepool. So I'll give it another go.
Thanks again

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Feb 2018 21:14

Just for info to rule out the NZ Richard Walton, if his parents were William and Mary Ann (i.e. just in case there was a mistake on the parents), this would be him in 1911:

Mary Ann Walton Head F 58 Derbyshire
John Walton Son M 24 Leeds, Yorkshire
Charles Herbert Walton Son M 22 Leeds, Yorkshire
Evelyn Walton Daughter F 19 Leeds, Yorkshire
Ethel Walton Daughter F 16 Leeds, Yorkshire
Richard Walton Son M 13 Leeds, Yorkshire
Ernest Walton Son M 11 Leeds, Yorkshire

I would have said I'd still check with that tree owner in case they were sloppy in their research. (I wasted a lot of time once tracing a set of my greatx2 grandparents that someone here had in their tree, with completely false info because she had just picked a marriage with matching forenames out of the air, which I finally realized from doing my own research.)

However, since your Richard was born in May 1898, he would not have been 66 at his death in April 1964. So two mismatches do seem to rule that one out.

Just one other thing to note: while their destination port, if they sailed, may have been Quebec City (or Montreal, Quebec), it is probably not likely that they intended to settle in Quebec/Montreal, as it was heavily French speaking and not many English immigrants would have been destined there unless they had family or employment here already. So that makes it all the more difficult to trace them. Knowing his wife's name (and possibly children's names) could be a help (for instance, to find the couple on a 1960s voters' list), but it might still not be possible.

ArgyllGran Report 11 Feb 2018 18:03

Just in case they got the date slightly wrong:

Richard Walton
in the Web: UK, Royal Marines Registers of Service Index, 1842-1925
Name: Richard Walton
Birth Date: 18 May 1897
Enlistment Date: 17 Aug 1914
Division: Royal Marine Light Infantry: Chatham Division
Register Number: 18715

But there were two Richard Waltons born in the April-June qr of 1897.
