William HOLMAN & Ann FIRMAGER - 1851 census

Rebecca Report 9 Feb 2018 16:37

Is anyone able to find the following family in 1851 census. They should be around the area of either, Merstham or Limpsfield in Surrey.

William HOLMAN b1811 (Surrey?)
married on 16 May 1846 to
Ann FURMIGAR (spelling can be various FIRMAGER, FURMINGER etc) b1816 Surrey (most probably Limpsfield)

Parents:

William = William HOLMAN b1786 and Elizabeth HOLMAN (don't have maiden name) b1786

Ann = John FIRMAGER b? and Mary FIRMAGER (no maiden name) b1791 Surrey

William HOLMAN and Ann FIRMAGER christen a daughter named Sarah HOLMAN on 2 Aug 1846 in Limpsfield. Residence given as Merstham, Surrey.

Ann FIRMAGER had 4 illegitimate children prior to her marriage to William HOLMAN:

Mary Anne FIRMIGER
christened 1 Feb 1835
Limpsfield, Surrey, England

Elizabeth Heath FIRMIGER
christened 5 May 1839
Limpsfield, Surrey, England

Edwyn James FURMIGER - most probably known later as EDWARD
christened 15 Aug 1841
Limpsfield, Surrey, England

William Firmager the son of Ann Firmager, (servant) - he died on 14 Mar 1845
but his age is given as 8 months, so he was born in 1844.

I have found both William HOLMAN and Ann FIRMAGER living with their separate parents and siblings in the 1841 census. Both families are living close together in Limpsfield - census HO107/1077.

I now am trying to trace William and Ann in the 1851 census after they married in 1846. I am assuming they would have 4 children living with them, i.e. Mary Ann FIRMAGER, Elizabeth Heath FIRMAGER, Edwyn James (Edward) FIRMAGER and Sarah HOLMAN. The FIRMAGER children may now bear the surname HOLMAN.

I would expect William and Ann to be living in Merstham or Limpsfield or close by.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi Andy,

My goodness the spellings are quite creative! Yes, I’d agree with your Mary Ann marriage and 1861 census find. This is the first mention of Mary Ann’s father as George. Her half-sibling Edwyn (Edward) mentions his father’s name as William FIRMAGER on his marriage certificate, Edward marries Bridget MULVERHILL in 1864 in Wandsworth.

Thank you!

Hi Andy,

Yes, that might be William HOLMAN’s death in 1851.

I wonder if we can find Ann in 1861, although she may have remarried by this time....

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 9 Feb 2018 17:56

Hi Andy,

Okay, so if your death registration for Ann is correct, we can forget the 1861 census.

The child I’m most interested in tracing in 1861 is Edward b1841. He may still have been known as Edwyn, however when he married in 1864 to Bridget MULVERHILL he gave his name as Edward FIRMAGER. It would be great to trace him in 1861.

Sorry, Can't see Edward in 1861 at the moment.

Is anyone able to find James HOLMAN b1848 and/or Herbert HOLMAN b1850 in 1861 census or thereafter? I've given up with Edwyn/Edward in 1861 - I have him again after his marriage to Bridget MULVERHILL in 1864, so only missing him in 1861.

I'm hoping if I can find James and/or Herbert his half siblings, it might lead me to Edwyn/Edward.

Thanks to anyone who is able to help,.

Hi Andy,

Definitely a possibility. Such a shame they only noted initials. I’ll see if I can find them after 1861. The search continues.

Thanks again!
