Hi
I'm looking for a relative that lived with my nan when she was a young girl...

Rachel Davies born: 19 May 1861 (according to 1939 register).
We believe they moved to Newport from West Wales, most probably Cardigan.

Davies was her married name - according to 1901 census she lived with her husband James Davies and daughter Eleanor (who also moved to Newport).

We're trying to establish her maiden name to make the link between her and my nan's mother - Jane Thomas, born 1895/1896. Jane appears on 1901 and 1911 census with Rachel Davies.

We have looked through marriage records and census etc. Does anyone have any other ideas to find out this information?

Many thanks

What year was Eleanor born? Her mother's maiden name should be found on the GRO index, enabling you to look for a marriage for Rachel and James.

Ahh thank you! Didn't think of that.
She was born 1884

Yes that's it!

We THINK that Rachel's maiden name was Thomas, so Jenny's mother would be a sibling of Rachel. I need more proof though!

Note on the image 1901 there is no mention as per the transcription of "divorced" so that is clearly an error.

Most likely marriage for a James Davies to a Rachel, would be after the birth of Eleanor so she may be reg in mmn ?

No mmn is shown on that birth registration for Eleanor ...... so we assume that it was the same as the child, therefore Thomas

SylviaInCanada Report 23 Feb 2018 00:14

Again, there is no mmn for Jane Thomas ................ which suggests that she was also an illegitimate child

THOMAS, JANE -

Possibly the child of a sister of Rachel's?

Thanks everyone for your replies so far.
Lots of information that we didn't know.

The main thread we're looking at is as follows:

Jenny/Jane Thomas was my nan's mother. She was adopted and we have no idea of her mother's name (currently waiting for birth certificate - Feb 1895 to confirm).
On marriage certificate, father's name is recorded as David Thomas, master mariner.

1901 census living with "adopted" parents - Rachel Davies we think was Jane's auntie but she was called Granny Davies by my nan, so presumably was regarded as Jenny's adopted mother. Rachel moved to Newport with my nan's mother (recorded in 1939 register)

The only concrete evidence we have is 1901 and 1911 censuses. I can't seem to find any census prior to 1901 with links between Rachel, Eleanor Jenkins (nee Thomas) and a possible mother for Jenny.

I suppose the ultimate aim at the moment is to find a birth record, for Jenny/Jane and then her birth mother and father.

Thanks so much for your help so far. I've tried to include as much as I can!

Sarah

I don't see them together on any census apart from 1911 - but by 1871, the first census on which Rachel would appear, Eleanor would have been 14, and possibly working away from her parents' home.

You may have to buy the birth cert of one of them, to find out parents' names, in order to find the family in censuses, to see if there were any other sisters.
