Hi all,

I've come to a bit of a dead end with the above and could do with a fresh pair of eyes please.

Thomas was christened Kendal (Westmorland) 10/2/1867, mother Mary Thompson but no father named on either his birth reg or christening. I found them on the 1871 census at Ackenthwaite workhouse, Mary still not married, age I think was 25.

I haven't found either of them again until Thomas marries Margaret Jackson in 1896, and they appear on the 1901 census in Barrow in Furness. With Thomas & family there is a Mary Dumphey (c1847, Kendal), recorded as mother in law - but it think Margaret has given the details and it was actually Thomas's mother. Mary dies in 1923 in Barrow.

Can anyone find a marriage for Mary Thompson to a Dumphey please, or find her and Thomas on the 1881/91 census? She is not with Thomas on 1911, so haven't been able to find her in 1911 either.

Many thanks

Sorry I had spelt Mary's name wrong - now amended.

Deaths Sep 1923
DUMPHEY Mary 81 Barrow F. 8e 785

so she died as Dumphey

the cert should say widow of

its possible she may have married before so the marriage wont show Dumphey/Thompson

That 1911 census looks promising Prickles - right area as Mary claims to come from Kendal.

I've looked for death of her husband in Barrow, but nothing really jumping out, I've tried FreeBMD for a marriage but haven't used alternative spellings for her surname. Will try that next.

Actually Nyx, that could really be a possibility for hubbies death. When Thomas married Margaret Jackson he named his father as Thomas (a labourer) but I've thought this a fabrication to save face - maybe not. If only they could be found 1881/91 - I've had no luck, but only have limited access these days to other sites.

I have had a previous thread, about his step-daughter born before marriage:

Just a random spelling? but as it's right area may be worth looking at if only to discount

Marriages Dec 1884 (>99%)

Dumfay Thomas Barrow F 8e 1198

edit doesn't look likely, this may be the irish couple on 1891

That's a possible Nyx, but on the CumbriaBMD index they record previous name if father has been named - and in this case there is no dual registration. This could be because she hasn't named her father though, but if she hasn't not sure how I could confirm this from a certificate.

I'll make a note of it, and when I can get into the records office will check the church register - married at St Lukes.

Hi Erika, no Milnthorpe isn't far - and Thomas had been recorded as born Millomroth on the 1911 census - which doesn't exist. I think you are onto something with that one, it looks very promising, thankyou.

I just can't tie in Maria Clement with Mary Thompson - not seeing a birth for Maria to establish mmn either, to see if she was a Thompson?

THOMPSON, THOMAS - Order
GRO Reference: 1867 M Quarter in KENDAL Volume 10B Page 610

I believe this to be his birth registration Malyon, as there is no mmn recorded - which would tie in with the christening.

Yes, my thoughts as well Erica - there's just nothing to tie Maria to Mary that i can see at the moment. I can't find Maria's birth registration, although it may not have been registered, nor can I find a christening on familysearch.
