On the 1939 Register I have found Joan Maddocks(Fletcher) living in Manchester with I presume her parents William and Bertha Fletcher Would I be on the right track??
I suppose Fletcher in brackets signifies her maiden name??

Sadly possible death showing on probate records 2007 for E K Maddocks
and 'possible for Joan M 2013

All the records that I can find online are taken from Freebmd ............. I can't see a Parish Register to show the actual certificate.

I think we can assume that it is Joan M Fletcher ................ but you need that certificate to prove it.

There IS a Joan M Fletcher marrying in Sept 1952 but not to Edward and not in Wellington .............

I think the mistake was made in Wellington

I think the only option is to buy the marriage certificate, and see what that says.

Yes that seems highly likely as they were both together on erolls at least till 2005, Edward K Maddocks wife Joan still in vicinity of Wellington .

I can't find Joan Fletcher entered anywhere.

I went to the image on freebmd, and they are both there, entered as Maddocks

It looks as though it was a mistake made in the transfer of entries from Wellington to GRO

Perhaps just a mistake, on the entry for surnames, ie that she was Joan Fletcher

it's saying that both Edward AND Joan Maddocks married a spouse called Fletcher ............ but there isn't a Fletcher!
