Esther Fanny Doel married Charles Edwin Maidment 26 Oct 1819 in
Westbury, Wiltshire, England. I believe her to be born about 1802 near Westbury & she died in South Australia in 1866. The witnesses to their marriage were Job Doel & Hannah Doel. I do not know the relationship to her. I can not find her birth nor baptism. Most of their 9 children were baptised in the Old Meeting Independent, Westbury. their last born was in Sth Australia. Any guidance much appreciated, Thankyou

One interesting thing ..............

A Public Family Tree on ancestry has an image of the actual marriage from the Parish Register of the Church of England on which it says that Charles Maidment, Bachelor, and Esther Doel, Spinster, were married by Banns. That means that both were over the age of consent, ie 21, unless one or both lied.

If true, her birth date has to be around 1798 or earlier.

It was also interesting to see that Charles Maidment and Job Doel were unable to sign their names, "mark of" was used, but the two women, Esther and Hannah Doel both apparently signed their names.

The initial entry by the Vicar read Ester, with "h" being inserted later ................. have you looked for the other possible spellings found for an Esther .........

Thankyou everyone for your replies & help. Much appreciated.

I have searched for her at the Chippenham Archives & did see the Marriage Certificate but the printer was not working that day & I didn't get a copy. This was years ago. I searched for her receiving poor relief, being removed from the Parish, prison records, poorhouse & the few available records on Non-conformism.

I have found a Hannah Doel later marrying a chap named Job Ransom. This to me was significant as one of her Daughters Sophia has Ransom as her middle name. Sophia is my direct ancestor. I also noted that the marriage occurred in Dilton which is near Westbury & on FMP, I found Esther Doel & Charles Maidment

(In both Ancestry Hannah & Ester/Esther marriages are transcribed as in both Dilton & Westbury.)

Her children are
Edwin Charles Maidment 1820-1884
Fanny " 1824-1857
Jane Harriet " 1826-1881
Sophia Ransom " 1828-1906
Elizabeth Burbidge/Burbage " 1832-1873
William Joseph " 1835-1898
Mary Ann Horrell " 1837-1841
George James " 1840-1916
Julia Olivia " 1845-1921

This is as much as I can find. Relatives in Australia have not managed to best of my knowledge have no record of Esther's origins. And I would have thought they may have some info passed down to them more so than myself.
Thankyou all again.

Oops, I see my message which I started before having to leave it, has crossed over with yours. At least I feel that I may be on the right track with your help. Thankyou so much.

Adelaide Observer (SA:1843 - 1904) Sat 30 Jun 1866 Page 5
MAIDMENT.On the 18th June, at Strathalbyn,Esther Fanny,
relict of the late Mr. Charles Maidment, aged 66 years.

Esther Fanny Maidment, a widow, aged 66, died from typhoid fever on 18 June 1866 at the Everleigh Arms, Woodchester, near Strathalbyn, South Australia. The South Australian Register newspaper noted her death on Friday 29 June 1866

This would make her birth about 1800

Marianne ...........

Much of the information on a person's death, whether that is a newspaper reprot or the death certificate, is only "hearsay". That is, what the informant (relatives, friends or cares) have been told.

The only things that you can take as accurate, whether that be in Eng;and, Australia or anywhere else, is the date and place of death, the cause of the death, and the name and other details of the informant / docotr/ coroner.

Names of the deceased, age, marital status etc is "hearsay".

I would never accept a date of birth derived solely from a death certificate or newspaper report as being accurate.

I have personal knowledge of this ............. my grandfather lied about his age and birth date for most of his life, probably starting with his marriage. My uncle registered his death as the one we all "knew". 6 weeks later, uncle found a birth certificate pushed to the back of a drawer ................. birth date, month AND year were all different.

Information from the marriage certificate implies that Esther was of full age ......... until her baptism is found, it might be better to widen the search by 2-5 years.

Thankyou SylviaInCanada,
I agree with you but I was asked what I 'knew' & that is it. I widened her possible date of birth/Baptism by 10years each way. I also tried to find her receiving an education as she signed her name on her marriage but no joy there either.
Thankyou again. Every message is helpful
