Kucinta

Kucinta Report 3 May 2018 00:01

This might just be coincidence, but there was a William Bennet who attended Sidney College Cambridge, the same college as the one attended by a Martin Bennet in my earlier post. Admittedly it's not an uncommon name.

Name: William Bennet
College: SIDNEY
More Information: Adm. sizar at SIDNEY, May 18, 1615; B.A. 1618-9; M.A. 1622.

Thanks for your replies will try universities the name Deforges pops up in my tree years after

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 May 2018 01:22

He could have gone to one of the universities then in existence ........ Oxford and Cambridge spring to mind. Not sure of the others.

If he was one of your ancestors, he presumably was married and had a family, so he would not have been a religieux, ie a friar or monk ordained as a priest.

Just as a matter of interest Charles II had been on the throne since 1682, so England was back to being Catholic, after the Protestantism of Cromwell.

Tothill got a new rector in 1682 (Peter Desforges) - so maybe Martin(e) had been rector there until his death:

http://www.forum.familyhistory.uk.com/showthread.php?t=15106

" . . . . . . Peter Desforges, a French Huguenot who came to England in 1681, presumably to escape persecution in France. He was ordained in the Church of England and sent to Tothill, LINCS in 1682, where he was the rector until his death in 1725."
