How did you find out that he was born in Middleham, Yorkshire?

every family tree on ancestry has him born in Lancashire, although the 1841 Census has him as not born in county

paphosdave

paphosdave Report 9 May 2018 20:57

Buried in St James Churchyard, Church, Accrington.
Birth found on familysearch. it was the not born in county that made me search further afield

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 May 2018 00:32

Did that birth on familysearch give the father's name??

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 May 2018 00:43

I cannot find a baptism for a James Brod(e)rick on Family Search Parish records

It was not a user-submitted record that you found was it?

paphosdave

paphosdave Report 10 May 2018 19:44

Not sure what a user submitted record is. All I have is what you have reproduced on this thread. D.

ah! OK

so it should be somewhere.

user-submitted records on Family Search means information submitted by Mormons, and they are usually not accompanied by official documentation (reference to Parish Register, for example), and so are not trustworthy.

SylviaInCanada Report 11 May 2018 00:42

Unfortunately, the IGI is now hosted by Rootsweb which has been off-line for many months as they attempt to sort out major problems, and I can no longer access what I used to be able to do.

But the information you gave says born Lancashire ...... yet you mention Middleham Yorkshire in your first post. Where did that information re Middleham come from??

I can tell you there is no James Brod(e)rick b.ca 1760-1770 shown on lancs-opc (Lancashire Online Parish Clerks), I can't find him baptised in records on ancestry, FindMyPast or on FreeReg . That could indicate that he was not baptised.

On the other hand, his name is not exactly unusual, and the 1841 census plus the burial are the only 2 indications of his age. Ages on the 1841 Census were usually down rated to the nearest 5, and the information on death is only what is known to the informant and may be wrong. We're no further ahead!!!

Nor can I find a marriage for him and Jane Hinde.

In addition, Jane also says she was not born in county on the 1841, so the same applies re her age as it does to James.

I've found 2 baptisms for children with parents James and Jane born between about 1804 to 1810 in Accrington, but they don't give Jane's maiden name. I am surprised that I couldn't see any baptisms for children before that .............. it could be that older children were born elsewhere OR that Jane was James' second wife. The common name causes a problem there, as well as all the possible different spellings the further back you go.

OK

I have just found this marriage on FamilySearch. I'll post it, then go and try to prove it on other sites.

Interestingly, it looks as though Jane signed her own name while James was unable to do so and had to make his mark.
