It would have been better to keep everything on one thread, Frank, to save duplication of research.
For helpers' reference - here's Frank's earlier thread:
https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/military_chat/thread/1372568
It's also a pity you ticked "answered". GR doesn't make it clear enough, but that 's meant for when you have received the information you asked for, and don't want any further help - not when you've replied to something one of the helpers has asked you. Unfortunately it can't be undone.
Thankfully you haven't done that on the other thread.

Too many random William McKays - It's a very common name.
The one who married Esther isn't the right one - his father was Francis, as per Maddie's post.
Frank's William's marriage (already posted on the other thread but copied here as this seems to be the one we're using):
Catherine Looney in the Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958 Name: Catherine Looney Date of Registration: 1872 Registration district: Cork, Ireland Volume: 20 Page Number: 111 FHL Film Number: 101251 Records on Page: Name William M'Kay
Oct 5th 1872, in the Roman Catholic Chapel at Ballincollig [?] William McKay, full age, bachelor, soldier. Residence at marriage: Ballincollig. Father James McKay, deceased, printer
Catherine Looney, full age, spinster, servant. Address: Ballincollig. Father: Daniel Looney, deceased, labourer. Witnesses: Theobald Murphy and Ellen Duggan.
On the 1893 death cert, he was married and a pensioner. The cert originally said he was a widower, and was later corrected on the instruction of the widow, Catherine McKay. Died 13 June 1893 at 11 Anglesea Street. The informant was his son James, whose address was Kensington Palace Barracks.
This is the birth of the son James;
SR District/Reg Area - Dundalk Birth of JAMES MCKAY in 1874 Name JAMES MCKAY Date of Birth 1874 (3 Nov ) Group Registration ID 8562542 SR District/Reg Area Dundalk Sex N/R Mother's Birth Surname N/R
Mother: Catherine McKay nee Looney Address: Barrack Street, Dundalk. Father: William McKay, Corporal in 17th Lancers.

Re the one born in Gamrie -
this is his baptism record on Scotlands People:
MCKAY WILLIAM JAMES MCKAY/MARY WEST FR916 (FR916) M 20/05/1847 155/ 30 462 Gamrie and Macduff
If you register with SP, and buy the minimum of credits (30 for £7.50), you can view the image of the original document for 6 credits. It may (or may not) tell you James's occupation.
I can't see the family in 1851 - or later, for that matter.
In 1841 there's a James married to a Mary, and he's a fisherman in Gamrie In 1836 there's a James who's a servant in Cairnbo, Gamrie.
I don't see one who's a printer.
