Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help with getting me further back than these 3rd Great Grandparents.
They are buried together in Ecclesfield church Yorkshire with date of death on the stone and recorded - William 26/3/1849 aged 92 and Elizabeth 24/7/1829 age 73.

Marriage in Cathedral St Peter Sheffield 13 Feb 1789
3 children. Harriott 1790, Elizabeth 1792 ( my 2nd GGM) and William 1796

Only 1841 census for William living at Dykes Hall Wadsley Yorkshire. Says not born in Yorkshire but not saying where.

I was researching this some time ago and seem to think William was born in Derbyshire either Chelmorton, Tideswell, Wormhill or Ticknell. IGI has two possibles but don't want to presume.

Wife Elizabeth Brittain I think came from Sheffield. I know I have put Joseph Brittain as father and some siblings but with nothing positive to go on except a christening of Betty Brittain for the right date in Sheffield cathedral father Joseph.

I visited Sheffield archives a couple of years ago and found papers of William Swann. There was a balance sheet of the late William Swann and mentioned are Jane Brittain, Ann Brittain and Samuel Swann Brittain is a trustee. I can only think these are his wife's family and could her family be traced through these names .

I have started 2 other trees Swann and Brittain on Ancestry but cannot connect anyone. I have put names in for ancestors of William and Elizabeth with no certainty.

We have 2 trees ourselves one private and one public called Jill Hawkins.

Some people also have them on their trees but they cannot get back also.

Does anyone know why when William Swann left money £2,700 he is not mentioned in the wills?

Thank you and best wishes

Jill Hawkins

Dear Tiggit.
Many thanks for all the leads which look very promising.
Still trying to connect Elizabeth Brittain who married William Swann to see if there is also a connection with that branch of the Brittain family.
So far we have been unable to find Elizabeth Brittains parents or siblings.
Any help much appreciated.
Best wishes
Jill

Did you notice that Elizabeth Brittain is described as 'widow' on her marriage licence? He is a batchelor. Witnesses were George Eyre and Amos Elliott.

Hi
Dear Alviegal. Thanks for this. Just wondering where you saw the info about the marriage of William Swann and Elizabeth Brittain. I haven't seen the marriage license stating widow. Where would I be able to find it?
Hi Safc. Do you think this is a better bet for Thomas Swan for a marriage than to Elizabeth Willson as stated above?
Many thanks
Jill

Hi Margaret,

Just to clarify:

The marriage Safc has posted for you is for Thomas BRITTAIN (1st husband of Elizabeth Brittain (nee Taylor) who then married William Swann.

The marriage of Elizabeth Wilson (which I posted previously was to Thomas SWANN (brother of William Swann)

Best Wishes
Tiggit
