I can't find Robert, Anne, John, or Jane anywhere.

Well, there are one or two possibilities for John, but not living with his parents.

They don't seem to have died or emigrated, either!

I don't think that 1939 record is the correct one.

I think that's this couple:

Marriages Mar 1907 (>99%)
ATKINSON James Robert South Shields 10a 1145
MATHER Annie Louisa S. Shields 10a 1145

The son George:

Births Jun 1917 (>99%)
Atkinson George M ( mms Mather) S. Shields 10a 1387

And daughter Annie:

Births Dec 1919 (>99%)
