Ach my nose is bothering me too much!!! I'm going to have a look at the MC. Will let you know what I find out.

Right they were married at Argyle House, Portobello. He was a 34 year old mechanical engineer residing at 69 Caledonia Rd, Glasgow. She was 21, of Argyle House, Portobello.

His father was George Buchanan, gilder (foreman) and mother was Jane Buchanan MS Horne.

Her father was Thomas Mitchell, cattle salesman and her mother was Jane Mitchell MS Oliver (dec).

George Buchanan and Jane R S McGann? were witnesses. The officiating minister was James Oliver, Minister Church of Scotland, Portobello. A relation??

Not at all rootgatherer! It's good to know you're thinking the same as me. Well done on finding the marriage of George Horne Buchanan in the first place!

It bothers me that the 1911 has the initials G H for what is, presumably, his mother. :-S :-S

I wonder if this is Janet O Mitchell? Middle name is Oliver. I see that Oliver is the middle name of someone in the original post.
Ah yes, Bruce Oliver Buchanan. Of course, Oliver could be the masculine form of Olive, his mother's name :-)

You need credits to look at that record. It'll give you George and Janet's parents' names including the mother's maiden names.

I found a letter dated 1986 from him to my family, Is there some way of uploading the letter for you to read? To tell the truth I could read it back then but now not so much :-D

rootgatherer Report 11 Jul 2018 09:38

There is a Buchanan / Horne marriage in 1870 but not Glasgow. It's Stirlingshire.

Cindy

Cindy Report 11 Jul 2018 09:28

Sorry, I just re-read your post and the J Buchanan could be his grandmother or mother whose maiden I believe was Horne? I could be wrong on this as I am going by my kid's great-grandfathers info.

Birthdate and him arriving in Victoria is right but dont know a J. Buchanan. For his wife is O. Brown. He lived in Seymour Victoria after arriving here.

Cindy

Cindy Report 11 Jul 2018 09:21

I have a letter somewhere that he wrote to me when he was alive .. George Buchanan who married Olive Brown. George told me himself that his father was George Horn. I will see if I can find the letter to recheck what he wrote.

So sorry long day I don't know how I got it wrong ..... long day ...

George Horn Buchanan
1868–1957

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 11 Jul 2018 09:10

Cindy, there's something not right about this. Firstly there is no record of a George Horn Buchanan in Scotland. So either he adopted the middle name of Horn or was perhaps born Horn and his mother married or remarried a Buchanan. It's also unlikely that a man born in 1890 fathered a legitimate son in 1903.

If you are certain of that 1903 birthdate, then you could buy credits for Scotlandspeople and look at the 1903 births to see if any of them match the February date that you have.
